Hi all.

Big fan of the site and this forum. I'm from NYC but haven't been back in about 3 years so I'm really missing the place.

Anyway, I just got this month's issue of Scientific American. It's all about cities and urban life. There's an article about super-tall buildings, too. You can read part of it here (need to pay or buy the paper copy to read the whole thing):

Kind of hard to believe that by 2016, the Petronas Towers won't be in the top ten tallest buildings!

Okay, so it does appear that the Discovery Channel might have borked the spire. The spire itself will be geometric, but there will be a pair of spiral strakes jutting out a bit from the edges of the triangles to help deflect wind away from the thing.

Don't know if anybody has noticed or if it's always said this, but on the PA website it says that the "Installation of podium glass will begin in 2012 to allow for construction activities and deliveries to proceed in this area." I'm guessing that means they've made a final decision on the new glass design. (I don't know if this has been reported previously; I've been gone for awhile.) So we have quite a few more months before we'll see progress on the podium (all that black material on the base isn't for the glass installation after all, it seems.) Wish they would give detailed updated renderings.

this is off-topic, but I wanted to post a note about how I hope this thread stays on the topic of construction of WTC1. I'm not really a skyscraper-follower in general, and joined this site awhile ago because I had a friend who was and liked this site. It was weird looking through architectural concerns of people who wanted to change the site altogether; when many non-architecture enthusiasts walk by the WTC site, they think about the progress of filling in a really dark time of New York's history, which changed a lot of other things in history.

I'm not really sure where it is, but I remember reading someone's post about how they didn't want to be reminded of what happened at the site. I remember thinking that this was kind of weird, because the entire reason why development at WTC is important is because of what did happen.

This is just to say: I hope everyone keeps this thread on topic as far as site construction. It's a hard memory for a lot of New Yorkers and we're on the anniversary. However the buildings progress, they fill in the gap of that.
