Was at the Folk Fest last night and although I am a proponent of the plaza it really added nothing to the festival. The food trailers are on the plaza but they just as easily could have been in the park or in one lane of Scarth or 12th adjacent to the park. The plaza really had no feel or vibe at all, probably because of the lack of circulation with all the construction and security fencing - plus you could not take your beer out there! Also none of the lights were on in the plaza.

The Park itself is still the centrepiece of the festival.

I heard that Harvard actually intends to redevelop and relet the street level of the Gordon Bldg to take advantage of the plaza. They will mothball the upper levels. Of course they intend this to eventually be the site of Tower 4. The barber shop is supposed to be out in September. Once PCL vacates the construction office they can begin redevelopment. In the interim there is supposed to be murals on the boarded up windows.

It will probably be better next year when they can actually plan around the completed plaza area. The festival was great though. Andrew Bird was fantastic.

I have to say I am very happy with this, it especially looks awesome drive from south to north along Lewvan, great addition to our city.

Rumour or Not?
I have twice now had people mention that they have heard the Sherwood Motel/Tomas Cook/Mr Lube on Albert Street South (at Parliament Avenue) are going to be demolished and that a new hotel is planned for this site. Has anyone else heard about this or know more info?

Does anyone remember reading/seeing what the total project cost is for developments like Centre Square or Gardens on Rose condos? I've been searching and can't find anything.

Regina's historic Davin Fountain, languishing in disrepair in city storage, could be refurbished as part of a 100th anniversary of the 1912 tornado that killed 28 people in the city.

City officials have recommended the city apply to Heritage Canada for funds to restore the fountain, funds that would come in conjunction with the 100th commemoration of the deadly cyclone that swept through Regina on June 30th, 1912 and levelled several city blocks leaving 28 people dead and 2,400 homeless.

Clearly the upper portions and the herons are now missing. These were taken in 1915 and 1920. I would like to see it back in the Park - It was the epicentre of the tornado damage. A memeorial plaque to the dead could be added.

I'm very happy to hear this. However, I hope they decide not to put it at City Hall. I find they already have a bit too much going on, with all the statues and monuments. Might be a bit of overkill there. It would be great to see it back in Victoria Park, or even Central Park would be a great location.

Central Park would be a horrible location. No one really uses that park; it's definitely not central to the city in terms of importance.

Victoria Park would be a good location... but I'm not sure where you'd put it to keep the park balanced. It would also be pretty busy there too as it has the Cenotaph as well as some statues (which is your same problem with City Hall).

I think if you want it to have a place of importance you are either going to have to go with City Hall or the new square/plaza... that would have really been a great place for it, but it would seem like a waste to people for them to have to dig up a part of it to lay down the plumbing.

Another decent spot could be in the middle of the Scarth Street pedway. Maybe where there are those raised curb-levels that have the planters on them.

I was listening to cbcradio today, and they were talking about the herons as well. They definitely want to try to refurbish the fountain to its original state. If they can't find the herons, they are in the process of trying to track down the original maker of them (they were made in Regina) to see if they can somehow obtain the plans so they could remake them.

If they do restore this fountain, which I hope they do, it should be somewhere along Lorne Street at Victoria Park, perhaps at the south-west entrance to the park kat the corner of Lorne and Vic. The 'Cyclone' as it was called travelled down Lorne Street from what is now Wascana Park. It needs to be in an open location where it has high visibility to (hopefully) avoid vandalism. I agree that the QE2 Court in front of City Hall is a bit busy - I hope they do not add anything else - other than better signage so point out that IS City Hall. I find the lettering above the entrance doors is hard to read from passing traffic on Victoria Avenue.

I didn't realize how tall it was. I think it would make a beautiful memorial and it definitely needs to be downtown. I'm glad that they want to restore it to its original state.

I believe there are plans for an eventual flower garden in that corner. I don't know how it would fit in, but that could be an excellent location as well.

Regina Inn reno's: They have replaced one set of sliding patio doors so far, on a 15th floor (top floor) balcony on the south side with a double swing-in style door (the type that has a glass insert instead of being all-glass). The door frames are white.
I really hope they restore the neon signage on top of the east and west sides of the tower.

I'm currently filming a movie in Regina and had the opportunity to get some nice shots of the twin towers and tower III today. Its a small budget picture, but we're hoping to get a screening at the RPL theatre when we're done.

It feels nice to have immortalized our towers like that.
