I asked a PCL worker and he confirmed that they are stand up tables. They were for the restuarant/canteen that was supposed to go adjacent to the twinkle plaza. That is on hold indefinitely and the foundation will be used for as deck for now. There are 3 temporary boxes covering the electrical for the big twinkle lights, which are not ready to install yet.

Let's hope an enterprising restauranteur comes up with a great concept for this key location and will be willing to pay enough rent to allow the City to justify the cost of the building.

Obviously there is a major reno going on there...all the balconies on the top few floors have been stripped away. Has everyone noticed this? I will try to get a pic of it today or tomorrow.

If it's the NE corner, wouldn't that be where 12th meets Scarth? Is it going to cover where traffic runs through as well? Are these LED's on strings or will there be a structure?

Don't know all the answers but the PCL guy called them big lights that sit on bases. In the render below you can see the twinkle plaza just south of the brown and white restaurant building. The actual twinkle plaza area is a bit different as it is triangular, not square. If you zoom in it looks like the lights are overhead, perhaps on strings. The traffic area is way over by the Canada Life Bldg - you can see the two tone grey ramp (one lane only on Scarth- just right turns.)

I agree with "mixed reviews" as there are several aspects of City Square that I initially don't like upon my first walk around this week but I will give the designers the benefit of the doubt and wait until it is complete. I am very curious about how the twinkle plaza will look because right now it doesn't sound impressive. I mean 580 little lights? Pre-lit Christmas trees come with more than that!

Looks like some more lovely beige coloured stucco, too bad they don't limit that to the big box areas. It would have been nice to see them retain some of the original look as it was unique architecture. I guess they want to use their corporate branding/imagery they have on their other stores..

I actually used to drive an SUV and it felt pretty out of place in that parking lot lol.

Ensure that you are vocal at the open house and to the city about it then. As it is a discretionary use, council has to approve it. That also means that council can require the design to be altered.

First use of City Square Plaza.

Looks pretty blah so far. Maybe it will be better later tonight when it is teeming with people and music and the lights come on. There never was much urgency laying the bricks. I never saw more than 4 of 5 workers actually laying bricks, and often there was nobody like right now.

i'm starting to get a sense of it, even in its unfinished state. i kind of doubt i'll have a chance to make it down there any time soon, so the pics are appreciated.

i'm really digging the cor-ten lighting structures. do they mark the edge of traffic on the south side? i still can't really picture how the plaza will accomodate vehicles, since all of the bollards/lighting standards/etc don't really seem to line up. i imagine some of these can be lowered as needed but the lights would be fixed, correct?

The south side of the traffic lane is the faint line running between the small storm drains, so it is a few metres from the corten lights. I believe they are going to add some wedges along the sides to further dilineate the traffic lanes.

i see it now. the height/distance was throwing me, i couldn't really picture two lanes of traffic in there but that white truck shows there's still a bunch of room.
now that that's noted, this plaza is massive!
