According to August's economic update the city has approved the hotel for Stavanger Drive.

Here is the link to the engineering company for the hotel; they are also doing a few of the largest projects in the city. It says it's under construction, but there is no further info:

Here's another rendering of proposed developments, involving some guesswork and approximation:

^ Thanks. The exact placement of the hotel is not known yet, and it's been stated that they will probably plan for a phase two or second tower on that site.

^ It was mentioned at the council meeting when they reviewed the proposals.

Fortis Properties project garners little opposition

One of the smoothest public meetings councillors had ever seen took place at St. John’s City Hall Monday.
...

All the project needs to start construction is for city council to approve the area for rezoning to allow for an office building.

The building will be 152,00 square feet and provide 262 parking spaces — many more than the city’s required amount. The main look of the building will be dominated largely by glass, but will have wooden sections to improve the overall esthetic. Parking will be a mixture of underground, street level and a connecting three-storey parking garage. ...

“Certainly for quite some time we’ve been hearing in this city about the significant need for Class A office space. You look at a lot of the reports coming out of various firms, you’ll find it’s really at about zero per cent vacancy right now for Class A downtown. So there is a very strong need for this type of development,” said Duke.

When asked why the project seemed to garner so little public response, a far cry from many other downtown developments, Duke said it’s all about doing your homework and picking the right location for a project.

Hopefully the others won't meet with too much protest either. There really aren't any sites that are available or better suited.

The more I look at it, the more St. John's seems to be getting its "city legs" under itself and shaking off the overgrown town appearance. It's great to see really and can only be good for the province to have a true city, not that it wasn't before but...you know what I mean (I hope).

Anyway, just improve the metrobus system and alleviate some traffic issues around the city, then you have an all around winner.

The thing is no one wants the historic character to disappear, so these developments are fine in this part of the city, there could even be more. The density is still not high, and there needs to be more updating and smaller retail development in this area too, office buildings alone will not bring that much vibrancy. There are not any high density residential developments in or around this area either, and that's one thing which is necessary but lacking. Hopefully the economy will remain strong enough to see these through.

I was downtown the other day and saw that they've begun removing the brick on the Duckworth side of TD Place. I'll be excited to see how it turns out. I didn't get a chance to have a look at the Fortis Building recladding or what's going on at 351 Water Street. I'll have to take a trek down once the weather improves.

Here is a map outlining proposed downtown developments, which is also added to the first page.

This includes some proposals which have not been heard from for awhile.

I also indicated existing major buildings for context, and updated it to show major retail & entertainment areas.

Do you agree about the extent of the orange lines to show the major retail/entertainment (heaviest pedestrian traffic) areas?

What's the Compusult office?? And is there any word on what chain the hotel at 123 Water is going to be? It looks like nobody is trying to enter the 4* class occupied by the Hotel Newfoundland. The Hilton will likely be a 3* or possibly a 3.5*. I would like to see another 4*+ hotel in the city, but I'm not sure anyone is willing to compete with the Hotel Newfoundland, which is an institution in this city, particularly with Sheraton's recent renovations.

That's the proposed Compusult office building. It was posted here on Page 80 (May 2010), and there hasn't been any news on it.
It is still on their website so I imagine it's still in the works.

I personally believe 123 Water is a dead proposal, I don't believe it'll ever get built. Having to cut 5 floors off the building may have thrown the profit out the window.
