That is a very bold looking building, although it seems ridiculously long. It should've been broken up into 2-3 smaller buildings.
Although the red panel-ing and balconies finishing have improved the general appearance a lot, the massing and darkness still overwhelms its surroundings. Definitely one of the not so graceful projects to have been built recently IMO.
I understand the leaning shots of the buildings^^^ but it trips you up the first time looking at the photos. It looks like the buildings are leaning....when it's just the camera leaning

Is there a general consensus in Winnipeg about the design of the CMHR?
Because I've been looking at a few renders recently and it seems a little...questionable, to me anyways. But, I guess I'll just have to wait untill it's complete before I judge it. And it is awesome that Winnipeg is getting this museum regardless!

^ as with any radical design, there is nothing approaching consensus regarding the aesthetics (or content for that matter) of this building.
i wasn't a fan when the competition winner was announced....the second and third place finishers were beautiful sleek modernist designs which i loved, but this one has really grown on me and in retrospect the others may have been a little too safe......the pure in your face scale of this design will be a game changer for the city.
the way i look at it....i would have been really disappointed had they chosen a liebeskind chard that would been like all the others....or worse yet it could have been a gehry crinkly tin....those designs are cliches now.
this building, like it or not will be like nothing ever built in the world....to me, pushing the limits of architecture was the most important goal for a once in a lifetime building like this.....safe or subtle would have been a lost opportunity.
the worst result would have been a building that makes people say....'it kind of reminds of that building in _______.".....this building is a completely new idea.
it will cause debate both for its content and its image....that is a good thing.....some will love some will hate but everyone will know it.....being tucked away on the edge of earth in winnipeg, it was particularly important that the design stand out as something provocative.....
being memorable is almost as important as being beautiful in this case....otherwise it would have been quickly forgotten like all the other galleries and museums going up around the world.
i am in the camp that it will be both memorable and beautiful...it already is.....the most unique building in canada in my opinion....

^Interesting! Thanks for sharing your opinion. The design is certainly unique, and should help Winnipeg to get more international attention.
