^ This looks alot better than the past renderings I've seen floating around.

As for that Halifax proposal I'm no sure if I like it. It completely disregards its context and would look much better in Toronto. I think Halifax should focus on adding more density in low to midrise form as opposed to just copying and pasting hulking towers from much larger, vertical cities.

I guess we can expect to get a Waldorf Astoria in Toronto pretty soon seeing they've broke into the Canadian market.

I'd be surprised, the high end is not going to need new rooms for quite a few years after this current round of building is done.

Is there access from the other side, or does it back on top an alley? I like it, but I don't like the way it interacts with the street and pedestrian level. I guess that is what having a parcel shape like they did does to a plan though.

Old news. - There are renders for the project in it's previous form at 44 Floors

Well, I mentioned that the other buildings in the rendering are shown as being shorter than they actually are. The towers wouldn't be particularly "hulking". The floor plates are quite small. The two towers together might make up the largest residential development in the city (probably not by a huge margin) but a single tower from the pair probably would not. I think the largest tower in the city has around 400-500 units.

This will certainly be the tallest in the city if it is built (I am not very convinced that it will be built), but it is not hugely out of scale with everything else. Halifax is in the process of getting its second tower in the 30-32 storey range.

I'm not even sure I agree about the "vertical city" comment. Halifax is small but it has around 100 highrise buildings. They're all over the city, and many of them could be prominent in a larger city like Vancouver.

The fact that they changed the proposal to include a 50 floor condo wasn't mentioned here. So I did. Not rocket science.

Not sure if it's a serious proposal, but it's a real company currently working on a few projects in the Halifax area that are worth in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I think the owner's also done a lot of development in Toronto. It probably is economically feasible (though maybe not particularly profitable) to build a mixed-use tower of that height with small floor plates in the city. There's another development right now that includes a 30-ish storey tower in Dartmouth.

Unfortunately a lot of planning rules would need to be changed to permit a tower of that size, which is pretty much the nightmare scenario for the city's NIMBY contingent (this probably has something to do with why it was proposed).

I don't mean to criticize the Halifax project, but I don't see any chance of it being built at that height. It goes against all the current rules and restrictions and would be 50% taller than the current tallest (Fenwick) in a city almost as height-phobic and heritage conscious as St.John's. The developer is certainly looking for some height and density, but 30 stories might be a more realistic goal.

Dylan posted the newsfeed in the top 25 thread last week.

You might think the top 25 is all Toronto, but if you'd bother to check you'd see the minimum point for entry is around 165, and that proposals from Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal can get on from time to time.

Yes but Halifax is for the most part a city of stubs, much like Ottawa or Victoria. There is nothing wrong with that, I wouldn't really want to see very tall buildings in those other cities mentioned either.
