A follow up on some points below and question asked of me:

First some info:

From T3 where AC flies into - if you take the cheapest now fastest route to St. Pancras to catch the Eurostar: Piccadilly lines connects at T3 /central terminal at 10 minute intervals, takes 40-45 minutes into St. Pancras. Cost 5 pounds for the trip one way tube ride plus your Eurostar fare. Also faster is a cab - around 27 pounds or Heathrow Express Train into Central London and then a taxi. Eurostar to Brussels, Lille, AMS or Paris Gare du Nord: the fare to Gare du Nord at E39 which is damn cheap and takes 2 hours max (my exp). Also goes to CDG.

Flying out of FRA means $$$ as this is not a Low Cost Hub. Not as cheap as BA flying out of LHR. Obviously BA and the Airport Authority are subsiding BA flights into Europe big time. I usually take the second flight after arrival and after 8 trips have never missed it. AC out of YEG has been very punctual. Yes I often travel carry on - but not always and use GOOD wheeled luggage. You can take the airport bus no cost between terminals or walk or likely grab a cab. Plan. The time saving and the great fares from LHR to just about anywhere in Europe on BA make it worth it. YEG to LHR is INFINITELY quicker than any flight through YYC/YVR/YYZ. A flight on AT from YEG to LGW is an option and should be considered given the vast amount of LCC operating from LGW. I use LGW to fly on EJ but with a flight a week it is not convenient. Sometimes I stop and spend my first day in London via Piccadilly line and just unwind - and why not. A pint anyone?

I must say I am surprised at so many thinking FRA is the solution to everyones problems. Fares out of FRA are $$ as its mainline plus these days they are pushing you to user DB...even as the best option to get to Berlin. Duh. By now some of you know I have a love affair with Berlin and Paris - travelling frequently. That said EdmTrekker is well a home boy from Edmonton and my motherland is this City where I was born.

Couple web-links for LHR to Europe flights:

http://www.flightmapping.com/UK/London/Heathrow/

and then there IS Gatwick - but what a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 getting from LHR to LGW

Well i will try to use LHR next year and go from there. As for FRA, of course it is not the cheapest if you buy a ticket TO Frankfurt and a seperate ticket FROM Frankfurt but who for the most part does that unless you're flying AT? Apparantly not many people were flying AT. FRA is a connection airport for the most part and getting around the terminals is fairly simple. And last time i checked, LHR is not a low-cost carrier hub either so i'm not sure what the point is there. Airboy maybe you were going through the construction zone like i was last November in FRA to have such a long walk. YYZ is worse than FRA in my opinion.

A decent website on London's airports.

^Perhaps the lower domestic numbers is evidence that less people are using other CDN airports to connect to? Good gains on Transborder.

Not in the airport biz, so can someone explain "transborder"? Is that to the US?

Canjet

Just noticed Canjet (737-800) flying a weekly CUN (via YYC) and a weekly PVR (via YVR) for the summer. Like last summer Canjet had the weekly PVR, but CUN was flown by Enerjet (smaller plane was a 737-700)
Also Sunwing flying a weekly non-stop to CUN (originates in YYC).

I would tip these additions are probably offsetting the loss of the TS FRA flight to give the slight increases in international numbers the last couple of months.

I would also tip the transborder increases to larger a/c on CO's IAH and US's PHX flights. Frequency of transborder is only a couple of extra flights per week, but the bigger metal and also the addition of 3 weekly LAS flights by our friends at Westjet would certainly be contributing.

Perhaps someone that works at YEG could answer these questions. I'm jumping into the DSLR world and would like to take some pics at YEG.

1. What runway does the AC 763 to LHR usually depart? I would assume Rwy 02 is the first choice and then Rwy 20. I know wind conditions matter but if i had to guess, which one does the 763 generally depart? Does anyone actually use scanners at the airport to find these things out while there?

2. The departure time of the AC 763 to LHR is 22:25. Is that the general gate departure or does the aircraft usually depart leter on? It seems that most of the flights i've been on leave later and arrive on time anyways.

3. The following link http://www.contrailsphotography.com/spottingyeg.html provides a spotting guide for YEG but i'm not sure how up to date it is in terms of where you can go around the airport these days. I would think spot #9 would be the best if you can actually get to the fence and climb on your vehicle and/or ladder. Any opinions on top locations than the ones provided on this spotting guide? Hopefully the RCMP don't come and nab me. Of course the mosquitos will probably kill me before the RCMP ever show up.

Anyways just curious if anyone has some good info.

Westjet Hawaii

Westjet has just loaded its Hawaii program from YEG

Same frequency as last year... but now starting much earlier.

OGG - Wed/Sun effective 18 Dec - 22 Apr

So now the question... what will they be using for equipment this time round.

Unrelated, but looks like Montego Bay is being dropped from YYC, YVR and YEG.

Truth in Advertising

Air Canada has set punctuality (departure time and arrival time) as something the folks at AC work hard at, second to the safety of its passengers...kind of scares me what ranks third in priority. But then I guess I do not need to worry about given the results.

"At Air Canada, the punctuality of our flights is a top priority, and comes second only to ensuring the safety of our passengers and crew. For this reason, we work very hard to meet every scheduled departure and arrival time - always without compromising safety. Air Canada makes its on-time performance* readily available on a quarterly basis, and compares it to the performance of U.S. carriers**."

and then there is this:

1. The 763 will depart whatever runway is active at the time of departure. Both runways are long enough to handle the flight. This contrasts with YYC where the widebody flights prefer the main runway over the cross wind.

2. 22:25 is the gate departure time. lift off is usually 10-15 minutes after that (assuming an ontime departure).

3. RCMP unlikely to arrest or detain youn unless your doing something really off side (like hiking over the fence and committing trespassing). More likely is that local security truck or RCMP will ask you to leave the area if there is a concern. If no concern, then go ahead and click away.

^Thanks.

Further to all the delay discussions, i have noticed that the LHR flight has been delayed 3 days in a row.

And AC has reduced its planned 2 weekly Cancun flights to 1 weekly.

The prevailing winds in Edmonton during the summer come from the SSW while in the winter it is NW. The SSW prevailing winds during the summer is not for too long 2-3 months. As a result, the majority of approaches to YEG are from the Southeast to rwy 30. In the summer you will see approaches from the northeast and northwest (july and august)
My trip back from LHR at the beginning of the month approach was from NW on RWY 12

BTW, a friend of mine was taking pictures from the departures level roadway - and the RCMP told him not to??? A good place to view is a spot at the leduc tourist information centre just in line with rwy 30. There are displays and info about the airport.

I'm not surprised they told him to leave, I would assume the same thing would happen at YYC on the departures roadway level.

Thanks for the info Jasper.

Bigtime to be honest, the Leduc spot is terrible. All you see is the underbelly of the aircraft. Most people want to see the side of the aircraft to see the airline livery, type of plane and maybe a fin number.

One area that i think is not a bad spot is the one-way southbound overpass you take into Leduc just south of the airport overpass. The only bad thing there is that you'd have to park on the shoulder and take your chances or park in Leduc and walk backwards and sit on the sideslope. Then you'd probably get a traffic ticket for jaywalking or causing a safety issue on the road itself.
