It is a great example of infill, if it actually occurs, the Granite School District continues to own that piece of property and Garbett Homes doesn't even have it on their website. I think they may have jumped the gun with their announcement to The Enterprise. I don't think there will be a model home in July.

I do think South Salt Lake is prepared to see some big changes. The area is affordable and is close to everything. It's also led by a young energetic Mayor that really wants to see change happen. As soon as the economy gets rolling again I think we will see some real revitalization.

Very near there on 300 East, there is another little infill neighborhood of single family homes that are very nice, about 15-20 homes built in the past year.

Haha, Well John, I can see what you mean... but then again, I think this new one is much better than the old Olympus High.

It's better...but is it necessary? Looks like a waste of money to me. We can't just rebuild something every 10-15 years because it's no longer in style. The old one looks completely modern and sufficient to meet a high school's needs.

The current Olympus High was built in 1953 (note it is not the Jr. High in the photo above), making it one of the oldest if not THE oldest building in Granite School District. They would never replace a school 10-15 years old in Utah. Olympus Jr. was over 100 years old when they decided to replace it.

The motivation to rebuild the high school was centered around the building's inefficiency and earthquake safety. Most of that is due to age, like, for instance, classrooms being chilly due to ancient window seals. I remember shivering in my junior English class because you could feel the wind blowing through the cracks. Other problems are due to changing standards. Enrollment has increased far beyond what was ever intended, causing bathrooms to be overcrowded, hallways to get ridiculous "traffic jams," not having nearly enough lockers that still work, etc. There's also been an initiative to put air conditioning in all the schools, which Olympus did not have.

In Utah’s West Valley City, they’re open for business

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/5...iness.html.csp

West Valley City • Jeff Scott scoured the Salt Lake metropolitan area for a new location for his Intermountain Bobcat franchise until he found the perfect spot.

His decision to move the business to West Valley City was helped along by the municipality’s economic development officials, who convinced Scott that his company would thrive in its new home.

The deciding factor was location. Scott considers West Valley City to be the epicenter of the metro area and its transportation crossroads...

Opps, I mistook the photo as the current building and the model as being its replacement. I didn't realize that the post was just comparing styles.

It was a nice day today so I thought I'd take some pictures of development around my neck of the woods.

1. Millcreek rec center on Evergreen Ave. around 2300 East (I really don't know anything about this):

2. Mockup. Looks like copper is becoming a trend.

3.

4.

5.

6. Holladay village center project (sporadically progressing). The roadblocks are actually blocking a future plaza, not a road.

^The pavers in these crosswalks have had to be replaced 2-3 times already. They keep failing.

7. I think the concrete thing is going to be a fountain. The frozen yogurt shop in the background, as well as a game store next door, opened this month.

8. The pavers have been sitting on those palettes for a while now.

9. Burton Lumber celebrated its 100th year in Holladay this year.

10.

11.

12. I'm not much of a breakfast person, but Sharon's is always good.

13. LA Tart, in the far corner of the red building, is very popular with high school age kids.

14. Gepetto's Pizza is a local favorite. They usually have live music on the weekends, so don't go on a weekend ;D

15.

16. Boulevard restaurant is one of the best in Utah, supposedly. I've never been, but reviews are great. I think it closed a while ago during construction, but it looks like it's open now. I think there's a dance studio on the top floor of this building. The striped awnings on the left are for Top It, another frozen yogurt place.

17. I don't know how Relics frame shop has managed to stay in business for so many years, but it has. What used to Holladay Pharmacy in the distance is now a full-blown Wallgreens. They replaced the signs last week, after Walgreens purchased the store a few years ago.

18. Coin shop and Al Rounds gallery. Some of these places are probably just run by rich people with nothing else to do.

19. "The Store Too," a nice little grocery store, and the 2nd location of "The Store," also in Holladay. They always have good meats and enchiladas ready to eat.
Too many old billboards!

20. Orlando hates this building, if I recall correctly. I don't.

21.

22.

23. The new Oakwood Elementary on Highland Drive. I wanted to get some pre-demo pics. Oops, too late.

24.

25.

26.

27. Cafe Madrid on Highland Drive. I'm not sure yet if this is supposed to supplement or replace their location on 3900 South. I presume it's the latter.

28.

29.

30. Cottonwood Mall property:

31. I just get a kick out of how high the creek is.

Thanks John for that great update. I have many wonderful memories centered around the Holladay neighborhoods. I am glad to see the gradual creation of a more charming and walkable Holladay Village, that is equal to it's beautiful vicinity and views.

Is that last pic of the Cottonwood Mall property? If it is... I hardly recognize it. Almost makes me want to say, leave it as open space.

Yes, it is. GGP was nice enough to plant some groundcover after they realized they wouldn't be building anything for a while. It looks like a prairie, and sometimes there's a big pond in the middle. It'll probably look that way for a while.

How is Leslie's French Pastries doing? Absolutely one of the best pastry shops in the U.S. That's one of those shops that has kept me returning to Holladay over the years.

Regarding the comment on photo #20, actually, I love that building. Back when I first discovered it, I thought it was one of the best contemporary buildings in SLC.

Yeah, that was someone else, forgive me. I was mixed up because you PMd me about a google maps pic I posted of the building right after someone else said they disliked it.

I'm not sure, Delts. I haven't been in a while. Guess that's something I should do. They have a lot more exposure at their new location.

Pedestrian tunnel under 1300 East connects Dimple Dell Park

By Benjamin Wood, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...Dell-Park.html

SANDY — A group of horsemen led the way through a newly-unveiled pedestrian tunnel on Tuesday, passing safely under the traffic at 1300 East and Dimple Dell Park.

Congressman Jim Matheson joined Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan and other city leaders at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The tunnel is part of a $33.7 million reconstruction project of 1300 East, financed by a combination of local, state and federal funds...

Draper eager to build an outdoor bicycle track

This looks cool!

Draper eager to build an outdoor bicycle track
BY PAUL BEEBE
The Salt Lake Tribune
Jun 29 2011
www.sltrib.com

Draper’s ambitious dream to build an outdoor bicycling arena at the mouth of Corner Canyon may be gradually turning into reality.

The City Council has voted to donate 5 acres, a site plan has been developed and marketing materials have been assembled.

All that remains is the biggest hurdle: raising $1.5 million in pledges to build the arena — known in the cycling world as a velodrome.

“I think it’s very doable,” said Jeff Stenquist, a council member and, for two decades, a bicyclist.

“I don’t think that we are overreaching. We just need to get support from community donations,” Stenquist said.

^ I noticed that this morning, looks very cool. Also, sounds like it's pretty close to becoming a reality.

Also, John or someone, I've been mean to ask about a corner in Holladay. The one on Holladay Blvd/Village, where there use to be a closed service station, with the old liquor store in the rear. Has that lot been developed yet?

This bike track is something I can really applaud Draper for! Getting a velodrome in the area just may clinch getting my brother to move out here!
