Yes, Ste-Foy (and a bunch of other municipalities) fusionned with Quebec City back in 2002. Whether it is a good thing or not I'm not sure, but the city seems to be witnessing the emergence of a second downtown area.

That is a crazy amount of development going on there. Even Montreal would be proud, to be sure.

This five storey residential building proposed for Victoria, which I posted in this thread a few months ago, has now been cancelled. The developer says “[The Cosmopolitan] was turned down… because of height and density.”

That is a nice scale project for Hammer's downtown. That is the kind of stuff we need for infill here in the Peg.

Looks like the site to me. I don't see the federal building in that picture anywhere.

In the foreground is the proposed Homewood Suite. Directly behind the Homewood is the old Federal building. The developer announced last week he'll keep the walls and build the glass addition above the old Federal building. There will be a West and East tower above the old Federal building.

To the right of the Federal building is a 6 storey Staybridge Suite (brown side with black roof) which construction is suppose to start soon. To the left of the Statbridge is a new condo building.

This kind of thing drives me crazy. I think it's usually a sign that the development process is way too political, driven by how loud people can be rather than by the quality of their reasoning.

In Halifax it's very common to have a debate of the style "should we have X in the city?" where X is something that already exists. Often it's also not really something that needs to be "debated" by the public at large -- urban format grocery stores are a good example of this. If they're feasible they tend to pop up. Halifax already has 2 (with residential above and underground parking). Despite this fact I have read numerous comments here and elsewhere how they could never work in Halifax and are only for big cities.

Wow! This is the type of building I would imagine has no problem getting approved in Victoria. Seems to fit the pattern of the built form there to an exact T.

Halifax has two? I suppose you could consider Pete's Frootique one although I've never been in there so I don't know if it's a full service grocery store. But what's the other one? The only thing I can think of that comes close is the Quinpool Superstore. I guess it gets points for fronting the street and getting lots of pedestrian/cyclist patrons, but the ample parking lot behind...

It does have a big apartment building above it so that must be what you meant.

Pete's is a full store, reminiscent of the Whole Foods on Avenue Road in Toronto. The Quinpool store does have the lot in behind but is vastly superior to the Barrington location. When the Barrington store was built a common excuse was that it wasn't feasible to do anything better -- even though the Quinpool location is about 20 years older.

The tall buildings are similar in that there seems to be little objective observation. Somehow a six storey building in Victoria is canned for being too tall when there's something larger right next door. It's hard to imagine a flimsier argument.
