It looks even better in real life than in the photos. Not only does it freshen the tower, but it really modernizes the skyline.

It looks okay but I'm finding it a little cheap and plasticky looking (up close, anyway). They are down as far as the 51st floor now ... I was looking over at it today from my neighbouring office and they have the floor numbers written on each of the metal platforms in the columns going up the side (so the workers know where they are, I guess). It's quite fascinating to watch this.

From what I saw today, they appear to be working on floors 50-52 so they completed the top 20 floors.

Looking good, but boy oh boy it seems to be taking forever. I remember last year at this time the rig was on the top floor, and infact it has taken over a year just for it to move down 22 floors.

Interesting Article

First Canadian Place — the big peel

The platform is currently at floor 50. The goal is to be down to floor 10 by December.

“We don’t want to spend another winter up here,” says Ellis Don construction manager Mike Brodigan.

By the numbers

45,000 — number of marble panels that have to be removed from the building and repurposed

1 — number of marble slabs that fell from the building’s 50th storey in 2007, prompting the recladding project

90 — weight, in kilograms, of each slab

100 — cost, in millions, of the recladding and interior redesign project

72 — floors in the building, the “tallest occupied building in Canada”

113,000 — kilograms the construction rig weighs

160 — people who can be up on the construction rig at any one time

3 — days it takes the current crew of 80 workers to finish a floor

15 — height, in metres, of the suspended three-level construction rig

265 — wind speed, in kilometres per hour, the rig can withstand

Marble vs. glass

How does the old material stack up against the new?

90 vs. 453 — weight, in kilos, of each panel

35 vs. 100 — lifespan, in years, of each material

320 vs. 80 — number of panels needed to cover a floor

45,000 vs. 5,625 — number of panels that will cover the entire building

Being ground and used as white ballast for rooftops, repurposed as tiles, carved into art pieces vs. should stay on the building for a very long time

Naturally veined vs. triple glazed, fritted glass with triangular design to mimic marble’s ability to catch light

Made in Italy vs. Made in Brampton

Dull and dirty from pollution vs. bright, sparkling white

So, the glass is heavier than the stone?

I love love love this tower. It is so elegant and simple. Anyone know what is being done with the old marble?

An equivalent stone panel weighs more than an equivalent glass panel. But the stone panels were smaller than the new glass panels.

In total the glass will weigh less than the marble it is replacing.

Apparently it is being donated to various local artists and art institutes for materials and whatnot. Some will be crushed up.

Wow it's really coming along!

A new diagram needs to be made for the drawings section. While the tower's still the same colour, there's a drastic difference on the corners/edges. I like it.

Look at that diagram again... Koops65 did do a new one with the re-clad tower quite a while ago... And he did a fantastic job, I might add!

^^^ I think he meant a diagram showing the building half and half while under construction.

Thanks Traynor, but I did my drawing based on the early renders, and now that I look at the pix those corners are even more dark than I expected. I'll have to modify my drawing once again. And I'll modify my 4:1 drawing as well, and post it when I'm done.

I think the way you did it was best. It highlights the corners just enough to show the windows in that section. Any darker and at the small scale of the Diagrams section, most people will not be able to discern that there are windows at all.

Take a look at a recent image by Steveve over at Urban Toronto. Note how, in full-sun, the corners look almost exactly as you have rendered them in your diagram.

I would reconsider your idea to re-draw this great render. Why mess with perfection?
