Corner condo: Another condo tower has been proposed for the northeast downtown residential neighbourhood at Wellesley & Sherbourne Streets. This latest development proposal — a 326-unit, 38 -storey building with street-level retail space and four levels of underground parking — would rise on the southwest corner of Wellesley and Sherbourne, the former site of a Beaver gas station and Baker’s Dozen donut shop. It would be similar in height to two recently-constructed condo towers right across the street: Verve, just one block west at the corner of Wellesley Street and Homewood Avenue, and 500 Sherbourne, one block north at the corner of Sherbourne Street and Lourdes Lane. The site sits kitty-corner to St James Town, a densely-populated neighbourhood with nearly 20 rental apartment highrise buildings, and is just two blocks west of the popular Cabbagetown residential district.

A few days ago I passed in front of this ordinary looking building and I noticed some construction workers had started to do some work on the roof. I didn't think much about it because I assumed that if it was a project worth mentionning, I would have heard about it by now. However, this morning I went on Quebec Urbain and they had posted a video showing the project and wow... I really like what they are doing here!! I'm so glad that promoters in Quebec City seem to be much more audacious with their design then they used to be. This part of town really is changing fast!!!!

Funny. Don't worry though, it'll never happen. The site is hardly condusive for development even remotely close to this. It's nowhere near downtown. It won't be on the LRT line. It sits beside an old dump turned into a park (nicknamed Mount Trashmore), and there is nothing but arterial roads, power centres and 40 year old suburbs around it.

wow good thing I bothered clicking the link it was well worth it. If I've learned anything in the last year or so is that the Quebec City projects' lack of height are hugely compensated by their quality and integration. Good stuff.

I personally call this : Quality and not Quantity, well done

I'm just not sure of the curved shape for the second project...Although no doubt here, this city needed something different and for future projects aswell.

Last night, I let my imagination run wild and here is what it produced. My talents with Paint are obviously somewhat limited so please be lenient!!! You can see one of the highrise of the historic downtown in the background. Here is the Laurier boulevard as it is nowadays (picture posted on flickr by Axel Drainville):

We continue the tour by adding the second phase of the Jules Dallaire complex, announced this week. The first tower is now 6-story taller.

There are many projects supposed to break ground on the right end side but I was too lazy to put them! A tramway in the middle of the boulevard, like it is planned to be implemented eventually, would be pretty sweet!!!!

India’s cultural centre in Toronto to rival London’s

India is planning a big cultural centre in Toronto along the lines of the famous Nehru Centre in London – the first of its kind in North America.

The London centre – named after India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru – is the country’s biggest cultural outlet in the world, partly because of its historic relationship with Britain and the presence of a huge Indian diaspora there.

“[Toronto’s centre] will rival, if not outshine, the Nehru Centre in London,’’ said a top official of the Indian ministry of external affairs, who was in Toronto to participate in last week’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas – a gathering of people of Indian origin in North America and the Caribbean.

“The new cultural centre will be ready by next year to cater to the North America Indian diaspora,’’ said Sangeeta Bahadur, deputy director at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, an autonomous wing of the ministry.

“We are looking for a suitable location in Toronto and once we find it, the centre will come up quickly,’’ Ms. Bahadur said. “The proposed centre will showcase India’s rich old heritage and traditions to the Indian diaspora and mainstream Canadians. It will regularly host Indian dance and music performances.’’

Ms. Bahadur said Washington was also considered for the proposed cultural, but Toronto won out for various reasons. “Toronto offers us many advantages, including its huge Indian population.’’

The Indian diaspora in Canada is about one million strong, including second- and third-generation Indo-Canadians, as well as those of Indian origin from East Africa and the Caribbean. Its per-capita concentration is several times greater than in the United States.

She said the centre will focus on the second and third generation Indo-Canadians eager to connect with their ancestral roots.

The cultural centre will have “a substantial annual budget,’’ she added, without elaborating.

Wow! Awesome work, these projects look pretty amazing. Where is Saint Foy?

I've never heard of this town, let alone that they are making towers like this, I'll assume it's a suburb of Montreal or Quebec City.
