What appears to be a bridge to an upper floor viewing area is being built above the security preclearance area. The bridge is a connection from the current upper level lounge. I also seem to recall seeing a rendering with an upper viewing area.

I dont know. None that I can see when I went through the master plan. The viewing area now is pretty limited for sightlines.

The renderings on Ellis Dons site show a small viewing area directly below the tower. But that could change.

^ it would have to come down before any expansion to the north methinks, so they can see the gates from the new tower. I'd imagine if it could economically be saved for office space, it would have been, and a new skinny tower would have been built instead. Unless the airports ego got caught up in new office space, which wouldn't be unheard of!

Bear in mind that the old tower was extremely cramped for space. New office space was much needed.

I still can't see them demo'ing the old tower, but we'll see

^ I take that to mean the tower is staying

Makes sense, destroying the old one would be very expensive, and I have a feeling that a lot of the electronics may stay in the old tower as well.... there's quite a lot of infrastructure in there, why move it if you don't have to ?

They should keep the rooftop patio too!

Not to mention that there are some things that make me wonder what's up. First of all, in the YEG Draft Master Plan, the photo of the hotel has been removed. Construction was suppose to be well underway. Other than fencing off the area, not a single space has pierced the surface.
However, the existing tower would make a MUCH smaller hotel, unless of course, there would be a plan to make it bigga.

^ there would have to be a pretty major retrofit including the addition of an elevator or two, probably new ground floor access and services, asbestos removal and a complete HVAC upgrade (doesn't need power... that building has TONNES of it).... but that would be cool option too.

Is there any airport authority that has built and operates it's own hotel at the same airport? Perhaps a small airport hotel would do us just fine with some upgrades of course.

WTF?!?!?

I walked past the "already supposed to be under construction" hotel location the other day and noted that there's S.F.A. that has happened to that site in the last little while. Are my worst fears being realized; The "old" tower's staying put?!?

<vomiting in my mouth...>

On a somewhat related note, is there any more work being done on the hotel next door (East) to the Signature Sandman on Ellerslie? It seems the site is empty and the hotel is only 1/2 done....
