By June 2014, the new passenger terminal at Saskatoon’s John G. Diefenbaker International Airport will be complete and spacious enough to serve up to 2.2 million travellers annually.

With a record-1.2 million passengers in 2010 passing through the airport’s terminal — which was built in 2002 for an annual capacity of 1.4 million people — the expansion will be complete just in time to accommodate growing demand for air service at the facility.

Restall said some areas of the building are already experiencing cramped conditions and other parts of the terminal have required expansion since the 2002 upgrade. The security screening area, for instance, has been expanded twice in the past nine years.

Between two million and 2.2 million annual passengers will be accommodated by the new terminal upon its completion in three years’ time.

A business lounge, restaurants, shops and a spacious waiting area will become available for passengers on the other side of the security gate as work on the terminal progresses.

I'm not sure about the A380, but it is already supposed to be able handle a 747. There is a limited amount of info on their website:

I highly doubt there is enough demand for that for quite a while.

I would think we would get a European destination like London or Frankfurt before Asia.

Regina/Saskatoon have been somehow "accomodating" B-747s for three decades now (namely Wardair Canada charter flights during the '80s). Right now our terminals can accomodate them as well (providing that they are here during off-peak times); however, ANY airport terminal, is in fact, stretched to the limit - especially when '747-type aircraft are full of passengers. The '380 would presently overwhelm YQR/YXE, not only due to their pax (passenger) capacity, but do to their SIZE!!! The '380's wingspan is 260'.

Global airports already find '380s a challenge - even after ATB modifications. If the '380 eventually does well in sales, there are plans to s-t-r-e-t-c-h it!!! Though I'll believe that when I see it.

This sums up Saskatoon's planning perfectly and I want the city to recognize that they are just building mediocrity. The only urban redevelopment that has been truly successful are the centre medians added to 25th street and 3rd Ave. It's about time the city started to think more strategically and planned for the future Saskatoon, not for the present.

Unfortunately a good portion of Saskatoon's population seems to go absolutely bananas when any money is spent on anything other than pot holes and snow clearing. If we had it their way, we'd be living in a concrete jungle with no parks, recreation facilities, street scaping or anything else that makes a city vibrant and fun.

The first glimpse at the proposed design of the $84-million Art Gallery of Saskatchewan was unveiled Wednesday morning at River Landing.

“Today is a day for rejoicing,” Mayor Don Atchison told a gathering of roughly 40 city officials and dignitaries.

Eight concept drawings were unveiled of the new gallery, which will wrap around the Remai Arts Centre.

The modern building, designed by renowned architect Bruce Kuwabara of Toronto’s KPMB Architects and Winnipeg-based Grant Van Iderstine of Smith Carter Architects and Engineers, features a predominantly glass front with tiered levels.

The gallery has jumped in cost from a proposed $58 million to its current $84-million price tag.

The bulk of the extra funding will come from donors. The fundraising goal has been increased from $8 million to $20 million.

“Our city and community is eager to see an art gallery emerge as the centrepiece of the south downtown,” said Doug Hodgson, chair of the fundraising campaign.

Describing the design as “extraordinary,” Art Knight, chair of the art gallery’s board, said the building will be “an outstanding city landmark.”

The drawings will be presented at city council next Monday for approval. A new funding strategy will be up for approval by the end of June, city officials said.

Vaguely. I'd rather that than Alberta's Gehry knock-off. FLW is more timeless anyway, IMHO.

Anyway, I like it.
It's hard to tell what materials will be used though.

Some promise here. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. The design is quite boxy... I was hoping for some nice curves.

Also, a question about the brown cladding... it it semi-transparent? It seems like there's a glow coming through in the night time renderings.

It also doesn't seem to tie in much with the design of the Remai Arts Centre, not that that's necessarily desirable given the design of Remai is nothing great. It will at least succeed in blocking Remai's blank side and boxy flytower from view.

I'd like to see more renderings, and hear more details about the design (materials, design philosophy, etc.)

I love the design, I like that it looks like modular pieces massed together. Any addition to the structure will easily fit in with the existing design. I like that there is just a transparent or slatted facade, there isn't too much going on, the simplicity makes this design I think. I don't think curves are at all necessary, the entire Riverlanding is curved from the coffee shop to the paths, to the art to everything, I think this rigidity will help ground the space and create some intrigue.

It also looks like they are utilizing inside and outside portions of the pieces to create a very unique gallery experience. It's like a toned down version of a Craig Dykers building to me

If you have ever been to the Chicago Art Institute the interior photo looks very very similar to the main entry hallway there. Not a bad thing..just saying similar

I was just going to say the same thing. I was part of the opening event for the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago Art Gallery and was extremely impressed with the use of material inside.

But yes, that looks very similar to the entrance, however, the rendering for this gallery makes it feel warmer and more inviting than the gallery in Chicago.
