we'll have to wait on the final plans though, to see how high exactly but viking has hinted it will be "high rise-ish"

It will replace most if that entire block. My insider sources tell me it's 12 stories. It will have pretty cool operator. Will be something unique in Winnipeg. We don't have any 'chic' hotels. Very big city.

They will apparently keep the Mitchell copp facade. It is probably designed by a Montreal architect, so ray wan won't be destroying anything else quite yet unless he does the rest of the complex.

That is really good news. I originally thought they might build the hotel atop a removed/converted copp facade, resulting in a parkade being built there and then 12 stories atop (a la Radisson) but if they still go up from the copp facade, they could "add" an extra story by doing that. Excited about the architect too, those final designs should be interesting.

If we're just focused solely on height, I suppose the HSC hospital hotel, or the new U of M campus residences will be good comparisons. Portage will certainly benefit from it, and its going to be good to have some other "height" construction project happening over the next few summers in addition to CMHR finishing up and Heritage Landing.

I appreciate the insight.

I sort of wish they'd put this type of development in the huge lot at the corner of Hargrave and Graham. Not only would I rather see the infill, but It'll be a shame to see 4play's big screen go - I think it'd be an ok place to catch a NHL "Moose" game if a game is sold out or they're on the road.

On the other hand, It will be nice to see some more prestige along portage avenue.

4Play is one block over. The block being discussed is between Hargrave and Donald.

I'm afraid you're mistaken. 4play is at the corner of Hargrave and Portage avenue, on the east corner - between Hargrave and Donald. Now, weather or not that building in particular would be involved, I have no clue, but as Vike alluded to above, it will replace most of the entire block. Now that I re-read that, perhaps "most" doesn't include that building in particular.

Sorry about that I had pictured it wrong. It would be a shame to lose the Dayton building, but perhaps the project is from O'Calcutta east.

It's not.

The SHED project is between Donald and Hargrave.

IMO, I don't care how tall it is as long as the street level is designed to support a good pedestrian experience.

I happen to think 12 stories works just fine for how vast our downtown is, we need other developments like hotels to fill those parking lots and other eyesores.

Just for a sake of conversation has the city ever thought that having 20-30 plus stories buildings would do more harm to the flight of birds; and whether using reflective glass trick birds navigational sense. I read this somewhere a while back I just want to hear people opinions.

I believe its the A&B Sound Building and the same project which was talked about last year. The developer, Longboat, is owned by the Chipman Family and they were talking with Centreventure last year about building a hotel there. Looks like they are close to a deal.

Regardless, if its AHL or NHL, it would be logical and convenient to have an upscale hotel across the street from the MTS Centre for visiting teams to stay.
