It was a brilliant move for Toronto to build the CN Tower. We need another exclamation point like that though. Maybe 2 or 3 more attention grabbers like that?

Anywhere north of Queen would be suitable. It would add another major peak to the skyline creating balance while keeping a respectful distance from the CN Tower. I'd love something right on Yonge-Dundas Square... right where that lame Toronto Life building is, or perhaps on top of the Eaton Centre.

So they are building a 58 storey tower at Scott street, which will likely be between 180 and 195 meters, and I have no idea where scott street is, and my iphone is in my pocket right now, so I guess I'll find out in a second anyways.

Still though thats crazy you're building a huge tower on a street that before now, I had never even heard of.

Photo Of The Day: More Of Lanterra Developments' Proposal For Two 58 Storey Condo Towers At 501 Yonge Street
May 10, 2011

Yesterday we ran a crude drawing of the proposal by Lanterra Developments for twin 58 storey condo towers at 501 Yonge Street. Today we get a great look of a massing model of the neighbourhood by Urban Toronto forum member CanadianNational.

_______________

The 501 Yonge twins sit roughly in the middle of the graphic with future neighbours roughed in for comparison. That's the 45 storey Five St. Joseph by Graywood Developments Ltd. and MOD Developments on the left. Demolition work has recently started there. In the middle we have the proposed 52 storey 21 Grenville by Lifetime Developments and CentreCourt Developments. And finally we have the massive 75 storey Aura at College Park condos by Canderel Stoneridge which is currently under construction.

This is truly a neighbourhood in transition.

Many more renderings can be found here. Great work CanadianNational

This area is booming! In 5-10 years, the Yonge/College skyline will rival the Yonge/Bloor.

Toronto Life formerly known as Metropolis where the AMC cinema is? What a dud that turned out to be. Now that the corner building just north of it is demolished perhaps they should take down the HMV to allow a larger floor plate. They could put quite a big building on that site and it could help elevate Toronto Life. It looks terrible as you walk down Yonge from the north.

A well designed signature tower on that site would help extend the skyline north, help fix Toronto Life, and counter balance the CN Tower if it were tall enough.

Another spot: I'd love something like Tour Verre on Victoria just south of Dundas Square.

New York City is currently a place where big proposals die. Let's not jinx ourselves.

I doubt Toronto will ever build anything like the original World Trade Centre and I doubt New York City will ever either. The current plan going up is obviously a special case that has nothing to do with market conditions.

True, cities do tend to get special case structures once in a while be it for a World's Expo, to satisfy the desires of an egomaniac, or a memorial as is the case in New York. Toronto's best chance is probably a developer/mayor who wants to put his/her personal stamp on the city.

There are around 50 300m+ buildings going up outside the Middle East right now. We're one of the few large skyscraper cities in the world that doesn't yet have one. Toronto is bound to get one sooner or later.

That's crazy great news about a 58 story tower on the East side of Yonge. Viewed from the Lake, with L-Tower, it will help to spread our skyline East after the great "Scotia Plaza drop off".

But all these new proposals have my head spinning. I am going to have to give up on rendering, because my renders are out of date before I finish them.

Toronto is out of control ri-donk-ulous!

I agree. developers are building WAY too many two/twin tower complexes. it's over the top.

Great news! Not only will the skyline be balanced out every little bit, but we creep ever closer to the point where someone throws out a 310m+ proposal!

Mayor? It's gonna take a lot more than ambition to pull off a tower of this magnitude. The cowboys (e.g. Harry Stinson) have by and large being taken out of Toronto's real estate equation which is a good thing. Top on the list for a new signiture tower would be a large multi-national relocating to Toronto.

Dubai where the majority of Middle Eastern's supertalls are being built is an economic disaster. This region is not a place I would be using as an example. Now, Canada and the United States have dozens of cities with skyscrapers yet only five have managed to top the 1000 foot mark.

My bet is that Toronto's first supertall will come via a mixed use building with some offices, a hotel and a lot of condos. The lot where Ritz's sales centre is now would be a good spot, though I'm sure the city's idiotic tapering policy wouldn't allow it.

All cities eventually have their day with a Drapeau, a Trump, or a what have you.

I did say "about 50 300m+ buildings going up out side the Middle East" to avoid this type of response. I didn't use the Middle East as an example. I don't know why I bother going that extra mile sometimes.

Quite frankly, I couldn't care less whether Toronto's next iconic building is an economic disaster as long as it gets built and looks great in our city. If it takes an Arab oil sheik to finance it, I'm fine with that. Please don't respond about how it will look Dubai tacky, because I did go to the trouble of highlighting in our city as a pre-requisite and that the financing was Arab, not the design.

The lengths one has to go on SSP to avoid a quarrel!

I want to see a supertall on that empty lot on the south-east corner of Bay/Gerard (the one beside Delta Chelsea), that way, it would be dead center on our skyline in the classic view from the west:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s...79.384096&spn=0.002111,0.004823&t=h&z=18

Something like these would do it for me here:

I like the second one better.. as long as those "spires" wouldn't be the thing that makes it a supertall.

I doubt that we would get something similar to 3 WTC in NY but it would be a welcome addition to Toronto.
The height of the building to the roof is 349.7m so the spires wouldn't be needed to make it a supertall.

I missed the outside part as there is no way that there are 50 supertalls going up without Dubai. (just in case, proposals mean nothing) I'm not going to talk about Dubai's aesthetics either but, not caring about the economics behind the next iconic building as long as it gets built is pretty idiotic. A potential real estate disaster of this magnitude could affect everyone's investments even if its financed by foreign money.

I just checked and there are in fact 49 300M+ towers under construction (nothing on-hold either) that are NOT in the middle east. Here is the diagram:
http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=50758668&offset=25
Unfortunately 9 of the 49 are less than 1000 ft. Worldwide there are 79 supertalls U/C, meaning 30 are in the Middle East.

Including towers under construction, right now the 20th tallest in NYC is already 245.7M, Bloomberg Tower. No need to wait a few years at all.
