I don't agree, it's going opposite of our new airport - I think the old design would fit well.

Like viking said, the top design might as well be the United Way building with it's wing wall or any of the Ray Wan buildings around. It looks like what gets built in generic suburban industrial/office parks nowadays.

Couldn't agree more
Original = cool, —, distinctive, something to wow visitors to the airport
Wan version = Caisse populaire on Provencher, cookie cutter blah

Why the change in design for the Grand Hotel?

seriously get another trick....the wing wall era ended with the final showing of pulp fiction.

how is he getting so much work....

i wonder what happened to the — 54321 design.

looks cobbled together. Yes, the orginal design looks like something special in comparison.

I think the UofW building on Portage (Science) is set back too far, because it doesn't maintain the street edge, and in not doing so it looks out of place in relation to its neighbouring buildings. I think Vike tried, by the way, but it could'nt be done with the building's passive solar requirements.

Also, I think buildings placed up to the sidewalk don't create a confining pedestrian expereince at all, but actually PROVIDE a pedestrian experience. If you can't look into windows as you pass on foot, what have you got to look at? Having said that, I think a few feet back (5ish?) is OK along Portage; less in the Exchange.

^ i wish it were something as altruistic as passive solar gain....the richardson college is set back from the sidewalk because it saved $350 000 in shoring costs during construction of the foundation....that may sound insignificant for a 40 million dollar building, but we were stretching every single dollar and that trade off allowed us to pay for the ceramic frit on the glass (instead of clear), the brick on the east face (instead of metal panel) and the reclaimed wood wall in the atrium (instead of painted drywall)....three pretty significant pieces of the building's character.

in the end i think it actually holds the street edge pretty well...its only set back 12 feet at the ground (9' feet on the upper floors) and it has monolithic massing.

once its done the 12' strip between the sidewalk and the building will be planted with tall prairie grasses, which will be an interesting experience walking along portage....there will be small bridges across to where doors will be located.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the new design. Caisse populaire on provencher is so boring.. I'm pretty disappointed with the hotel since the old design was pretty cool

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Hotels, condo in the works for south end
Latest of city's inn projects

...
Two new hotel projects worth a total of $30 million -- one an expansion and redevelopment of an existing property and the other a boutique hotel/condominium complex that would be a first for the city -- are in the works for south Winnipeg.

The first, a $15-million remake of the Dakota Hotel at 1105 St. Mary's Rd., is underway and should be complete by the summer of next year, a spokeswoman for the developer said Thursday.
Artist’s rendering shows existing Dakota Hotel (right) and four-storey addition.

The second, also costing $15 million, will see 56 hotel rooms and 32 condos contained in a single building built on a vacant property on Pembina Highway in St. Norbert.

I wonder how long the prairie grass will last in this location? Between the salt spray and sand from Portage in winter, and the general lack of upkeep by the university all year-round, my guess is not very long. The university planted native wildflowers alongside the new bus loop between Young and Spence last year and it didn't take long before they tore it all up and replaced it with sod. No knock against the idea, but the reality is UW is in a harsh inner city location with lots of traffic, litter and disrespect for landscaping. When new trees are planted along the streets around UW it never takes long for the lower branches to get broken and torn off. Plus, I can imagine that the area between the sidewalk and the science bldg will become a repository for snow plowed up in the winter. Generally that means lots of litter, salt and sand will all get dumped on the prairies grass.

In other UW news, anyone know what's going to be unveiled on the North side of Ellice opposite the North entrance of UW? It looks like a sign or monument constructed of stone (in a style similar to the stone bus shack on the south side of Ellice).

Condo's (I think, they could be apartments instead) are also about to be built in Waverley Heights near the corner of Pembina & Chancellor (behind the Mac's).

I drove by the lot today and saw an advertisement and I think a public notice board.

Caisse Populaire in St B was done by Stantec. I don't want every bad design thrust upon Ray Wan.

Right beside the old one... on your left just as you drive in to the departures dropoff area.

^^^What? The Commodity Exchange Tower is the Trizec Building. Are you trying to say that they are redoing the facade?
