Grant to help 82 Commerce St.

Montgomery Deputy Mayor Jeff Downes on Friday announced that the city is awarding a $165,000 grant to the owners of a Commerce Street building in an effort to revitalize the location.

The money will be used to redo the facades on the north and west sides of the three-story building at 82 Commerce St. The building currently houses Choices Chinese Restaurant and the jazz club Sous La Terre.

"This is another one of those pivotal moments in the remaking of our downtown," Downes said.

Mixed feelings about this one. Something desperately needed to be done with the building, but I have a problem in giving owners who would let the building rot like this tax money to fix it up. I'd rather see it condemned, and given/sold to somebody who would do the right thing.
