17th Ave & 33rd St is still an annoyance though. The traffic signal timing gives 17th a long green phase.

The first cross-beam for the overhead canopy is going up at the Shaganappi station location this morning. Hopefully we'll see an up-close view of the covering within the next few weeks (rather than the distant view we currently see at Sunalta).

This project just keeps getting better and better. I dont reccomend driving along 17th ave Sw or bow trail right now though......very rough pavement and REALLY bad signage with basically no warnings about strut-destroying bumps......

The launching truss is nearing the final span now, looked like only 2 or 3 more segments in the second last span left to be lifted when I went past earlier this evening. I'm thinking we'll probably see the truss starting to be dismantled within a month (I say this long as the abutment the guideway lands on isn't built fully yet, so they may have to slow down lifting the last span until its ready.

There's a new newsletter on the West LRT website. It mainly goes over what the major construction milestones will be for the rest of 2011, some of which will require more road closures, mostly at the at-grade crossings. The construction delays will mostly be finished by the end of the year though, with the remainder of the project construction taking place within the right of way, at stations, and then testing and commissioning.

Here's a map from the newsletter which shows the major work that will be occurring.

They were actually working on the tracks at the 26th ave and Bow Trail intersection late last week and over the weekend. It's pretty net to see track going in so early.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I think this thing is going to open early. Certainly not late.

The stations are substantially complete, and there's a lot of rail already installed. I'd think most of the rail will be installed by the end of summer. The electrical equipment is installed in most of the substations, or will be soon. The only thing that I'm unsure of the timeline for is the catenary and signal systems. If that starts up soon, I can't see it taking all the way to mid 2012 for handover to CT for the (up to) 6 months they need for testing, commissioning, and training.

Well as we saw with the NW extension from Dalhousie to Crowfoot the caternary and signals took FOREVER to be completed

Is there a "bonus" paid for finishing early? Also, will the City have delivery of enough LRVs to operate the line if it does open early?

I don't think there would be a bonus, as I think the contract is a fixed figure. What SNC-Lavalin would stand to gain though is a good name going forward on future bids, especially with the City of Calgary. Say, for the SE line.

All the LRVs will be in well before the line is in operation, even if it were to open 6 months early. They are sitting at about a third of the order already in, and many of the units are in operation already.

You get bonuses for some PWGSC (public works government services Canada) projects if you finish early.

Wouldn't the bonus be the money saved on salaries?

SNC Lavalin had the good fortune to tender the WLRT when absolutely no one else in Canada was starting anything. I think we are seeing the benefits of that now with the rapid work getting done by all the subs.

It is becoming clear from the photos that this really is going to be a signature public works project for Calgary. Put it together with a Gondola thru the University to Foothills Hospital and we will really have hit our groove!
