The special bit about the container based social housing is that it's with an eye to making better use of lots that would remain vacant or underdeveloped until the landowner was ready to redevelop. Make it quick, cheap, and transportable. I don't know if that's the case for the site in the news, but there was something in the news a few months back

I wonder what Cadillac Fairview has planned. Waterfront, Pacific Centre, Oakridge, maybe a new project ... All the American retailers finally moving to establish their own presence in Canada. Investment funds looking for deals to spend money on.

Indeed they dont, that would be their counterpart Ivanhoe Cambridge.

He prob got it confused with Cadillac's other major Metro Vancouver mall, Richmond Centre.

Been working on some Downtown South stuff (Burrard to Richards, Helmcken to Beach), and I count 21 separate projects in some stage of planning/development/construction. Lots happening in the area over the next couple years. And no I can't spill the beans on what all of them may be, here is a list of those that everyone should know about.

I know something is in the works for the northwest corner of Drake and Howe Street kitty corner to Cressy's Maddox project.

Henriquez and Partners did the design for the Murray Hotel tower at heritage building restoration at Hornby and Helmckin.

Something will come together for the site of the Artemesia project that bit the dust recently.

Any of those on your list awvan?

Yes the Murray Hotel project, NW Drake & Howe and Artemesia are all on my list. Still 6 more though! Also, I heard today that James Schouw is trying to rescue Artemesia from the bank, so who knows what will happen there. Anyone who wants big things from the site though will have to wait years (if it happens at all). Because of the size of the site it can only achieve 3.0 FSR (which I believe is what Artemesia was) without rezoning.

The Pantages Theatre on E. Hastings near Main and several buildings to the west will be demolished in the next couple days: http://bit.ly/fHYkgQ

It's pretty sad that the city let the theatre get to this point... obviously it's beyond repair now, but something could have been done years ago.

I am not looking forward to another massive vacant lot in the middle of the DTES mayhem. Apparently there are no development plans for the site.

Lot's of proposed new development for the DTES has been cancelled or been put on hold. The activists have gotten quite powerful lately:

The 99 W. Pender (Budget car rental site), recommended to go from 7 stories allowed last year to 15 recommended in the report has been STOPPED.

The 425 Carrall (B C Electric Building); recommended to go from 7 stories allowed last year to 15 in the report has been STOPPED.

Concord Pacific are wanting to sell this site due to all the problems with developing within the DTES.

There was a real momentum in the neighborhood a couple of years ago to change things, but now it looks like the status quo will remain for quite a while.
