I think it's had some moderate success in Las Vegas, no? LV probably has the largest monorail build out in the US. However I realize comparing Austin to LV is not exactly apples-to-apples. But mainly when I say "monorail" I'm more just referring to the elevated aspect of the train. In my opinion, elevated transit would be preferable for downtown just so that it doesn't impede with street traffic. Another alternative could be something like the loop in Chicago. Again, another city much bigger, but if it's get started now...........

Can't wait for that new hotel on Congress.

As far as any rumors SXSW would leave that is nonsense. SXSW is as much apart of Austin as Austin is apart of SXSW. It would not survive anywhere els PERIOD. They have tried similar conferences in other US cities and all of them FAILED. Even NXNE in Toronto is just a shadow of SXSW. LOL San Antonio does not have the music scene nor the the amount of venues and proximity of venues to each other to make an event like SXSW work, so whoever said that has no clue what they are talking about. SXSW will stay in Austin because it IS Austin plain and simple.

This was the site of the planned 44-story 21C Hotel tower, before they moved it to another location in downtown.

Former Whitley Printing site downtown under contract

By Shonda Novak | Thursday, March 24, 2011, 12:13 PM

The former Whitley Printing Co. site at Third and Brazos streets downtown is under contract to Riverside Resources, which is considering it for a potential apartment project.

However, Needham said it’s too early to say the company will definitely build a project on the 35,000-square-foot site. He said another possibility would be an office project there.

This week, Riverside Resources this week had civil engineers Bury + Partners resubmit an earlier site plan for the project that had been filed when the Poe Cos. had the site under contract for a proposed 44-story art-themed hotel and condominium project called 21c Museum Hotel.

This a total shame. We go from having perhaps the best designed building Austin would have probably ever seen to having some low to mid rise apartment building... I hope that it ends up as a a nice glassy tall office tower.

Am I right in saying that only one "highrise" started construction in 2010? Right now I would be happy with one more taking off this year but it looks possible that might not even happen. However, 2012 could be the start of the next big boom.

Las Vegas' was a pretty big failure - Seattle's was epic. LV was supposed to prove it could be profitably operated (didn't happen); Seattle was supposed to be the big test of having it funded to be BUILT in a non-tourist environment; again, didn't happen.

Monorail partisans are 'useful idiots' for road warriors for the most part. Look up the term.

We would have to tear up the Red Line to build it - so it will never happen. This is why I made such a big fucking deal in 2004 - that it WASN'T an incremental step towards light rail; it was a permanent shutdown of the only really good light rail opportunity we had (still true - the city's urban rail plan is the best we can do given that the Red Line exists, but it sucks in comparison to what we should have had).

Yes. I know that, and I happened to like the original proposal much more than the moved proposal and then its subsequent reduction.

Don't worry, the proposal is still on for that previous project. It was announced in 2007 as a 580 foot 44-story tower with hotel and residential space. They later moved the project to a different location, across from the convention center. The design changed. The plan now calls for a ~16 story hotel and a 44-story residential tower that will likely be around 550 feet.

Here's the thread on it in the Austin sub-forum.

Why?

Run light rail up Guadalupe and Lamar to Tech Ridge. Elevate the tracks on the Red Line over Lamar. That would be a minimal cost, and they already did that over the UP tracks.

Another interesting piece of info. that relates to this is that Round Rock is about to start their own bus service that will tie in to the Tech Ridge Park & Ride.
