-A TDL (Tim Horton's) spokesperson was at the meeting stating that they cannot support the VMP becoming a freeway because access will be cut-off at Admiral Drive. They say it will be a massive loss of business for them (there's a Timmy's at this intersection), local residents and other businesses.

-TDL recommends widening the VMP to a 6 lane expressway rather than converting it to a 4 lane freeway.

-TDL also states that they city is moving "way too fast" on this issue because the 2030 transportation master plan is to be presented soon.
Hey Tim. Horton!! Yo. Fark off!!!

Like anyone should give even a tenth of a shit that one (of about 30000000) Timmy's drive thru's would be affected. How many roads/intersections are affected by Tim Horton's? Traffic tie ups aplenty.

Remind me, why are the feds funding a $400 million hockey arena in Quebec city? The kind of money would get about half the "London Ring Road" built! Forget about relative city sizes, it's being spent on something that will ultimately be a private venture.
You raise a very good point. I'm not sure how much the senior levels coughed up for the JLC, but I'm sure they can afford to pitch in at least a portion of the freeway's cost.

As gas prices continue to increase, it makes you wonder how many people will be driving in 20-30 years when the first interchanges are slated to be constructed. I think there will be a gap between peak oil and when alternative fuels/power becomes affordable for cars, but I am getting off topic.

Everyone's entitled input on these decisions in our democracy, even sleazy corporate businessmen. However he did raise a good point stating that if the Admiral Drive intersection is closed off it would impact the residents in the area from accessing the VMP.

He stated that Timmy's is one of the busiest in the city. Still, the report states that this intersection will remain until 2058... that's a lot of advance warning to move/modify your store.

I have complete faith in the almost limitless adaptability of our species. If peak oil really is upon us, then economic incentives will force people to find a more feasible and efficient source of fuel. I'm guessing that companies (and consumers) who stand to lose from the inevitable collapse will want to commit to alternative sources long before the shock of death comes, meaning we should have a fairly smooth transition.

We seem to agree on the final point though; people love their cars, and will always drive. Which is why deferring infrastructure investment based on the "peak oil" argument is so stupid.

Let's hope so. If a smooth transition is made between peak oil and alternatives, people are going to continue to drive. Based on this analogy, road investments are still needed.

The only thing that will kill the car is better personal transportation such as flying cars and teleportation. Until they come, convert the VMP into a freeway!

Well Christ, if 2073 is the expected completion date, just forget the whole thing and wait for the flying cars.

Nice sign! Was it inspired by designs like these?

Reminds me of a very old and very bad drawing I made of a proposed collector/express system along Highway 401 in London.

Scroll ahoy! -->

Ignore the possible ramps at Adelaide, there's simply not enough room for more ramps between Wellington and Highbury.

Also ignore the start/end of the system in the west. It would have to be either just west of VMP or east of Westchester as there is only a short distance between the VMP and Westchester interchanges.

Maybe I'll update this sometime... I've gained knowledge with programs other than Paint since I made it.

Yes it was inspired by the collector signs in Toronto. I was looking back through this thread and saw your collector idea and inspired me to make that sign. I think we should take the collector idea a step further assuming a west leg of the ring road was made:

And here's an update to that sign I made. It gives you an idea of where the sign would be in this scenario. It would be placed right before the off-ramp for Westchester Bourne.

Has any one looked into the cost of collector lanes vs. interchanges? I kind of thought that they might give more bang for the buck than building more Parclo Interchanges. Collector Lanes might use less space and add access to more roads.

Would that happen to be the restaurant near Gainsborough and Hyde Park?

Speaking of which I Just drove out there on St. Patrick's day (sober of course), and I was amazed at how... unpleasant the little hamlet of Hyde Park was. I was expecting it to be teeming with pedestrians thanks to the warm weather, but all I could see were narrow roads with too many cars.

Yeah, that's the restaurant.

Hyde Park is not a pleasant place at all anymore. I try to avoid the area now unless absolutely necessary.

Oh well. I guess that's the price we have to pay for having morally bankrupt city planners and a dumb as nails council.

Come to think of it, when I look at the London local, all I ever see is complaints. Traffic. Sprawl. Decay. Liver and Onions that aren't available on Sunday. There is obviously something wrong with this city, and it is usually the fault of the idiots we elected to run it. Can we just boot them all from office and get the SSP Local London to run the place for a decade and fix all this shit up?

^truly. To that honored list, I would add: ex-mayor's-husbands-operating-loansharking-establishments. Not as noteworthy as liver and onions specials, but up there anyhow.
