In response to LMich's list of state populations (I don't want to quote that much text and waste space!), what do these numbers represent? I'm confused! There are still states that have not received the Census results for the "official" 2010 Census, yet there are state by state population totals? These are different, no?

USA Today's Census data site has sortable tables of counties and all cities for every released state, and it's a heck of a lot easier than the Census' FactFumbler or monster CSV tables. No census tract data, though.

Caveat --- 2009 data is from ACS, 2000 data is from the long form census. Slight methodology change, probably still comparable, though unadjusted for inflation/CPI.

Again I challenge you to back up this unsupported claim. Clearly there are some agreements that cities will replace housing, but it appears there is no across the board mandate--Wikipedia says the 1:1 replacement you claimed earlier in the thread was repealed by Congress--so what sort of requirement are you claiming exists now? I agree with you fflint. It is very likely a large part of the AA population decline in Chicago is related to the CHA's Plan for Transformation. The new developments at Henry Horner, Robert Taylor, Cabrini, will have less units total units and of the new ones being built, about 50% are for public housing residents. The other 50% are market rate or are rerserved as affordable, but not public housing.

Good question. According to these estimates, Illinois's population is up 110k from last year-- a pretty high growth rate for a state that saw it's population increase on average 41k a year in the preceding decade.

My only guess would be that the 2010 estimates are not based off the actual 2010 Census.

As I understand from the census website, the July 2010 estimates uses the Official 2000 Census Counts as a basis for the estimates.

After the Official 2010 Census Counts are released, annual estimates will then use the 2010 census counts as basis.

Yep, you're most likely correct. I guess I'm confused as why they bother releasing an annual estimate in a count year to begin with. If they are to release it in a count year, you'd think that they'd base it off that year's count. Meh. It's the Census Bureau; they aren't exactly known for making things easy or efficient or clear.
