Are "warehouse districts" and the like not created by the revitalization of old/existing buildings more so than building new properties to LOOK like old buildings though? (a genuine question)

True, and I would advocate against any developer trying to build faux-historic structures amongst true heritage buildings. That leads to a sense of false history and a "theme park" appearance.

However, I think the objections here are that the design of the new buildings do nothing to increase the livability of the area. An office building that closes up by 6 pm, with no ground floor retail or any other sign of life in the evening, results in a stretch of the block that feels barren and unsafe.

Peter MacKinnon - Stepping Down

This is to inform you that Peter MacKinnon will be stepping down from the position of president of the University of Saskatchewan on June 30, 2012. He informed the university’s Board of Governors of his decision March 4.

IKEA vs. Value Village

Actually, I have been a manager with IKEA International and the company is one of the most incredible organizations IN THE WORLD to work for. They are classy, treat their employees better than I have ever seen a retail organization treat their staff, and their return to the community is HUGE!! So, in answer to your question, yes I have seen an IKEA parking lot and everything down to the last sign, flow of traffic, flow of people and even the flags out front of the building are under continued scrutiny and monitored by IKEA for 100% compliance to the companies strict standards. I also know that the disciplines instilled in my staff were of the standards that most retail managers would give their right arm for; a far cry from those that some of these young people who work in retail believe they are today. The charity and fund raising events also went above and beyond any retailer I've ever heard of or seen. IKEA is more than a big blue and yellow box, they are an incredible retailer, and yes, I'd rather an IKEA than a Value Village in Stonebridge. Perhaps an area on 8th Street would be more accessible to EVERYONE who wants to get to Value Village - bus service would sure be better. Maybe we could ask Mr. Kemp to sell her DQ on 8th and then we'll have a huge chunk of land to put a Value Village.
I have worked at a senior level of management in retail industry over the past 20+ years, and I have to say that IKEA was amazing to work for and I'd completely embrace their arrival over that of a Value Village.

Many of my friends and family shop at Value Village who aren't poor whatsoever. It's a great place to go if you have little ones who outgrow their clothing every six months It's not a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. The drop box excuse is a sorry one, I never see more than a few boxes outside the Value Village on circle. The cite traffic as a concern yet an Ikea would be ok (the upper middle class wet dream). I wonder if that person has actually seen the traffic around an Ikea?

Give your head a shake, there's no way a Value Village will lower your property values. By that logic, a Wal-Mart would lower your property values too. These sound like the same people who complain whenever low income housing is built in their neighborhoods.

maybe none of my business but can I ask you why you left IKEA, and I don't think people here were putting IKEA down, they were just bringing Value Village up as just another retailer which I as a consumer view both as.

It's really great to see Saskatoon growing 5K-7K a year! I can see that lasting for a solid 5 more years. Hopefully the fascination by the public will filter into business elite and produce some more head offices within the city.

I know the sign is still there but is the building proposal between the old mykonos and 4th ave. anything or is it totally dead and the developer just forgot about those signs?

Man, I really didn't think that Peter would take my little comment so hard...

It looks to certainly last longer than 5 years. I've heard mumblings from city officials that they expect Saskatoon's growth rate to increase in the coming years and approach Calgary-like levels of growth.

The sign use to have a completion date on it. I don't remember what it was but they have updated the sign a couple of times as you can see some fresh layers on it. This photo was taken in June 2010. Really a great looking building and I think they are waiting for some interest to develop.

Saskatoon has what, nearly ten projects going in in the downtown area?

This is fantastic. Kudos to Saskatoon on moving forward. I picked a great time to move to the city

Ikea

I left to take on a position as a National Coordinator of Merchandising with another International retailer (pay increase of $30,000+). My point was to say that just because it's IKEA doesn't mean it's only for "the upper middle class" and to address the sarcastic query of "I wonder if that person has actually seen the traffic around an Ikea?" and to substantiate that I not only am familiar with it, I lived it.

When I heard that Value Village was placing another store in town and that it was going into Stonebridge, it wouldn't exactly have been where I would have thought that company would have put a store. It also seems to have "slipped" in under the radar with little or no consultation with the community - so I find it odd that the community leader would give it a green light. I would almost think it was underhanded and sneaky the way it just appeared out of nowhere and hit the papers once it was a done deal. I'm sure if the land was a heritage site someone would have had their knickers in a twist and been all over the proposal.

Kind of off topic, but I just saw a commercial for Harvey's that has me craving Harvey's. But I cannot satisfy that craving because we do not have one here.

I miss Harvey's and I wish someone with money would buy a franchise and, to quote Mike Holmes, "do it right." Put it somewhere accessible and make it a stand-alone and it'll do great.

Anyone else love Harvey's?

Saskatoon is too small for an Ikea anyways so arguing about it is pointless, although people here sure do like to shop and I'm sure it would do very well here.

In case anyone's interested, there's some new retail going up in Warman, including a Tim Horton's.

Thanks for the dinner idea tonight lol...Sask, PEI, and NL are the only 3 provinces without one but it should make sense that Sask. should. Someone should get the ball rollin'!

Do you think they'd go for the same argument people use for the domed stadium in that the entire province would use it?

FYI: fences are up around the house on the corner of College & Clarence. Looks like it might come down?

Wouldn't it be great to that and the gravel parking lot on the corner give way to luxury lofts with main floor retail.
