Cynthia Nikitin has shaped downtowns and remade plans for transit stations, libraries and civic plazas in some of North America's largest cities. This week, she turns her planner's eye to Saskatoon.

Nikitin is the University of Saskatchewan's first planner-in-residence. Brought in by the U of S regional and urban planning program, the renowned downtown planner and the vicepresident of Project for Public Spaces in New York is working with university students, addressing city planners and community groups and delivering a number of talks.

StarPhoenix reporter David Hutton sat down with Nikitin at City Hall.

They won't connect to Yorath Island. It's a protected woodland area and they deliberately don't make it easy for people to reach it.

Jerry. Thanks for the photos of the overhead walkway. I also as a kid crossed that many times. The fun was to be there when an engine was going under and the smoke was coming up. Those were the days.

Come on 1ajs I'm only in my 50's.

There is still a lot of kid left in me. Just finished playing a game of Black Ops on the PS3 and placed 1st. Not bad for a kid my age.

I was aware of the island's status.

My vision was of the traffic bridge section on the north and south end of the island with a fenced boardwalk around the island providing protection and yet allowing a view.

The large lot at the bottom of Avenue D South, a stone’s throw from the 20th Street liquor store, has been home to many things: A notorious apartment building, a deadly fire, a demolition, empty liquor bottles and stray animals.

Now, with the help of a socially minded developer, a non-profit housing organization and a proposed city incentive program, the vacant lot could be transformed.

I would really like to see some high density infill projects happening, fill up the condo market to make it more affordable. I have a feeling until Riverlanding is completed urban living will only be luxury in Saskatoon.

I think it would also be interesting to create more green space downtown. It is all along the river and would be nice if it were available in othe rlocations. Perhaps a park could be created in the warehouse district?

That empty lot on 24th Avenue and Pacific across from the Rumley building would be a perfect place for a park.

I doubt it, it doesn't seem to be a practical location for that, I would say that either down Broadway or the rail bridge or both is most likely. I hope they have more then one connection going over once they finally implement one.
