^ Atch can be notorious for saying things that don't quite make sense.

He may have been referring to the special Design Review Committee for River Landing that reviewed the project first. They issued a handful of recommendations for improving the project, which the developer has addressed in this latest design proposal.

Then, last week, the Municipal Planning Commission gave its approval. If Meewasin gives the green light this week, then City Council will consider it next Monday. After that, a building permit can be issued.

I expect the last two hurdles will be cleared easily.

I can not recall if it has been announced already, but Co-op is going ahead with a $30 million dollar expansion to their distribution center. Tenders go out in April and construction should wrap up in 15 months.

The sold signs went up yesterday on the commerical property along the east side of Betts Ave in Blairmore. The City was selling this as one parcel all the way along Betts. It will be interesting to see what goes in here as well as the rest of the Smart Center property now all the spaces are full by Walmart. Some good eating places along here would be great. The Granada is the only good one west of Idywyld. They really need something with the hotel and pool in this area.

I'm not saying this is what saskatoon should do with the traffic bridge. Its just an interesting project.

When the CN yards and station were downtown there was an overhead walk that crossed the tracks from 1st Ave and 20th street to Ave A and 20th. It tied both sides of the city together. 20th Street was a busy and friendly area. Seems like things go around in a circle. The hood is good.

Interesting approach to reusing a rail bridge.

I believe Stantec is doing the design work for the new Traffic Bridge. They are also tasked with developing a reuse plan for the steel superstructure. One can only hope the list of options includes relocating it to a prominent place for use as a pedestrian bridge (with a sleek, contemporary twist of course).

stantec....boourns to them. Not near the top ( or middle for that matter) of firms I would like to see work on an important project like this.but what can ya do.

Since the bridge isn't really a pressing issue with the city (or at least it doesn't seem like it is) at this moment...It would have been neat to see them open up a design competition to firms and schools. Just to see what concepts people could come up with. Wasn't really keen on any they had come up with so far.

What the heck is the technical committee?? I'm starting to become sour towards the MVA, they seem to make any riverfront project just a huge pain in the neck. I can't count the number of these BS approvals the RLV had to go through.

I agree, MVA is a huge PAIN.

I would love to see one or two sections of the bridge used to connect Yorath Island as the Meewasin Trail expands in that direction.

I was watching a Westjet flight coming in from the south a couple of days ago. Is the fact the flight line so close to downtown on this approach part of the reason we don't have taller building downtown?

Only in theory. We are a small metro with a decentralized work force and practically unlimited land. That's the reason. Our tallest buildings went up, what, 25 years ago? Nothing approaching their heights has been proposed since. Even the modest 12 storey proposal that in 275 is awaiting demonstrable proof of demand before going forward. No, the southern approach may one day be an impediment to highrise development but that day not yet arrived.

Edit: the lighthouse project beside the police station was to be in the 30 storey neighbourhood and was approved. Yet it didn't get built.

I do believe we have a 76 metre restriction in place for the downtown area which is around 25 stories.

The height limit in Saskatoon is 30 stories or roughly 100m.

Hardly. Absence of taller buildings is more closely related to scarcity (or lack thereof) of developable land and market demand. Jerry is right about the 76 metre restriction though.

The height restriction issue was discussed when the Lighthouse tower was proposed for the police HQ parking lot. Several pages of it...begin reading here

Quick question for those who enjoy golf. How would you feel about golfing under a flight path? The reason I ask is the land directly south of the runway is zoned for business/light industrial according to the Airport Industrial LAP. That location has always struck me as being an unattractive location for businesses. Maybe I am wrong. A golf course seems like a much better use for that land (it is about 180 acres). FWIW, I stole the idea from Calgary.

Yes I clearly remember walking across it when I was very young and believe is was removed in the early 60's. Pleasant Hill was my neighborhood growing up and St. Mary's was my grade school. Yes I'm from the hood lol.
