Great so we have traded a nice comfortable indoor setting with these stupid big box stores where you have to drive from one store to the next, or if you decide to walk you take your life in your hands.

Works great in Florida and California, not so great here in the cold cruel prairies.

I completely agree. Big box setups are stupid in our climate. As a parent with small children I find them as close to useless as you can possibly get. I cannot really walk my little kids across busy parking lots in the winter and if you do you are bundling them up and then dressing them down and then bundling them up....what a pain! Plus the parking lots are a mess and you can't get a stroller through them...

Give me a mall ANY day. I really don't understand the movement to big box...except the desire of the retailers to get away from paying mall lease rates. It has nothing to do with customer service that is for sure.

200,000 from the Mosaic Tower.

<100,000 for the one on Broad and 12th.

Where are the other 200,000 square feet coming from? New tower?!?

It doesn't have the capacity we need, and also the design of the endzones would have to change entirely so we would be able to add more temp seating... As it is, there is absolutely no space for it, and we definitely would need a lot for a Grey Cup.

Also, although it is a nice design... it is pretty much a scaled down Commonwealth. I would want something a little bit more unique.

As ceedub said... Do the dome.

Definately do the dome. I hope they do not do a scaled down version in the CP rail yards. In my opinion it would be counter-productive to downtown revitalization because you would have a facility that could not be used for half the year. In essence, you would have a white elephant for half the year taking up room in valuable land. If a dome isn't built downtown, then fill in the CP rail yards with a mix of office, retail and green space. The warehouse district would still be connected with downtown but it would be used all year round. If they want to scale back the dome and build an open air facility, then build it somewhere else, not downtown.

+1 When we like to slum it, we park in Costco, walk to Victoria Square, walk to Sobeys, and then hit Costco for lunch. All mostly doable seven months out of the year. More slum walking: parking at Winners, we can do Superstore, Rona, Jysk, Winners, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Bulk Barn, London Drugs. None of the parking lots are pedestrian friendly, but we make do because loading the offspring in and out of the car is, as you stated, a pain. Plus I'm cheap.

I'll take Cornwall any day of the year over any other shopping area in Regina.

Does that number include suburban office space?

New office construction currently underway includes Harvard Developments Inc.'s 208,000-sf Tower III at 12th Avenue and Hamilton Street in Downtown Regina. The project is targeted for completion in 2013. Other downtown and suburban developments expected to complete construction before 2013 include a four-storey, 80,000-sf office building at Albert Street and 11th Avenue; a three-storey, 55,000-sf medical office building at Pasqua Street and Dewdney Avenue; a 160,000-sf suburban office park near the Harbour Landing development, and other projects in various stages of planning.

I have never heard of a project and Broad and 12th. What do you know and what are your sources (generally).

I think they meant the building at Albert + 11th...

I don't think that was even included in the numbers. I can't imagine there being very much actual office space in that building.

Harvard 208,000
Albert+11th 80,000
Pasqua+Dewdney 55,000
Harbour Landing 160,000

That's over 500,000 sf. It also mentions other projects in various stages of development.

Generally the trend over the last 15 years or so would support this, but I'm not sure it's entirely true. Cornwall, Vic Square, as well as Southland have all, or will soon, receive upgrades, as well is the midtown in Saskatoon. Another major mall in Saskatoon has been upgraded, though the name escapes me...

More significantly, I'm thinking of Vaughn Mills North of Toronto, as well as Cross Iron Mills, North of Calgary-both huge, new developments that are definitely malls. If anything, I think we might see new developments include both mall and big box components.

Those two malls are abberations...

Vaughan Mills opened on November 4, 2004, and was the first regional enclosed shopping complex in the Greater Toronto Area since the Erin Mills Town Centre opened in 1990.

CrossIron Mills is the first enclosed shopping centre to be built in Western Canada in 20 years.

Yeah, those are both anomolies for sure. Almost everywhere else, developers are going for the "lifestyle centre" model - an attempt to make big box garbage feel more human scale...

Agreed. But my point is that perhaps the success of these developments might signal a slight shift back toward indoor enclosures, especially ones that also include Big Box, ie: Lowe's, as well as destination retailers such as Bass Pro Shops and large scale cinemas.Have you been in either of these malls? My take is they are both quite successful.
