I drove by the Lighthouse downtown recently and noticed they have started work on the addition/renovation. Does anyone recall seeing any renderings of what this is suppose to end up looking like? How many stories, exterior, etc.??

The only woman among 7 candidates... or was it 8. One of the candidates didn't even provide a photo for the mailout that showcased all of them. She also had by far the slickest web and graphic presence. Other candidates' websites had spelling mistakes, clipart, and rants. She was smartly dressed and full of good answers when she came to my door (with an assistant ahead of her who would identify houses who actually wanted to talk to her, likely to increase the efficiency of the whole door knocking endeavour). And I can appreciate fresh young voices on city council. I wish her well.

I saw that too, I had no idea there was a waterslide in there but if you're going west down 20th you can see it.

Regardless of the cladding selected, it will be an improvement over the gravel parking lot that was there. And on the existing old Capri Hotel building, for that matter.

wow...that is a pretty ugly end product. I understand the desire to 'fill in' gravel parking lots, but we shouldn't be so desperate that we consider this "OK".... Maybe it will look better then the conceptual drawing

To me, they're making the best of their situation with their current budget and location.

The current building is ugly, but I don't see how the addition is that offensive.

I don't think that's glass on the left. It might be glass in the joining area where old meets new, hard to tell. This particular image doesn't really give one much to go on. In the end, 60 extra places for the long term disabled can't be a bad thing.

Don't be fussy people, just be glad something is actually happening in the downtown. Another parking lot being filled in, is a great thing. Maybe someday developers will start building upwards, if and when land becomes a lot more scarce in the core.

Just noticed this evening that the "blue fence of death" is up around the old "Pho Famous" Restaurant on the corner of 22nd and Idywyld...

Some might remember it as the Husky House, among other names.

Let me just say that it's about damn time that someone brings down that place. Even an empty lot is better than having that place exist. What an eyesore on a busy street.

C'mon, it used to be interesting driving by there just to see what name it was operating under each week. There had to have been a lot of them...

Nice piece of dirt, though. Not sure of the zoning there, but combine the restaurant site with the adjacent parking lot and you have a pretty attractive parcel of land.

Not super exciting, but another significant amount of money being spent by the city. I just hope it doesn't make our good tasting water taste like crap without the "evil" fluoride.

I thought twice about posting this article but since it relates to Parcel Y I thought some may be interested as it is connected to construction and development.
These reports date back a few years but it's good they are being dealt with.

Privacy commissioner criticizes city again

For the third time in four months, Saskatchewan's information and privacy commissioner has issued a report critical of the City of Saskatoon.

"It's unusual that we have had to issue as many reports as we have with respect to a single public body," said commissioner Gary Dickson.

On Thursday, the commission issued a report about an access to information request dating back to Feb. 25, 2005. The unnamed applicant wanted copies of each of four expressions of interest submitted to city administration with respect to the redevelopment of Parcel Y at River Landing. The city refused, saying the information was provided in confidence. The same applicant filed another request on May 1, 2006, asking for information related to the proposed spa hotel to be built on Parcel Y. That request was also refused.[...]

I could not agree with you more!!! What an embarrassment on one of Saskatoon's major thoroughfares...At times the overgrowth was so much, you couldn't even see most of the building (which was not such a bad thing, I guess) but it looked like a set out of a post apocoliptic movie

I agree that this should be a prime piece of real estate as it is one of the major intersections of Saskatoon and entrance into the downtown. Hope that something deserving of our appreciation goes up there! Maybe a Tim Hortons

Doyle to unveil PotashCorp's pledge

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. CEO Bill Doyle is expected to show some love for the province on Valentine's Day.

Doyle will unveil how the company intends to keep its "pledge to Saskatchewan" on Monday at a Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the company confirmed Tuesday.

The promise was made last year in the heat of PotashCorp's battle to fend off BHP Billiton Ltd.'s hostile takeover attempt, a bid that was ultimately quashed by the federal Conservative government.

The pledge included the repatriation of executive jobs from Chicago to PotashCorp's Saskatoon head office, a commitment to international marketing agency Canpotex, the development of a strong aboriginal workforce and a commitment to community programs...

This is pure speculation, but maybe as part of this "pledge" PotashCorp will announce that they are the lead tenant for 275 Second? If you think about it, with seven or so executives moving to Saskatoon from Chicago (plus one or two executive assistants each), does their current building have room to accomodate this? Seven executive-sized offices plus assistant's offices must take up a fair amount of floor space. I'm not sure how much vacant space is in their current building, but it always looks to me like the rest of the Scotia towers are filled by other tenants.
