That looks like the Southeast corner of the west bathtub, where the original Tower 2 was. You can see the south H&M tube (big round tunnel) where it ran under the 1/9 subway line. You can also see the subway tunnel cut open to the right of it.

^Yep. the steel walls definitely date from the original Hudson tubes construction. They were repurposed as truck ramps in the WTC, leading from the truck entrance at 7WTC, down through the complex at the B1-B2 levels.

Ahhhhhhhhh, the time stamp tells me why I was so clueless about that phase.

I was up to me ears in the Prudential Center construction and had just enough time in the day to work, eat and sleep.

FEBRUARY 4, 2011

For me, these cranes serve as placeholders for Tower 2, a marker for where this tower will eventually rise into the sky like the tower behind them...

Not to dig up a dead horse here, but I've been able to simulate the glass's distortion effect, complete with the "mirror finish up close, and wave afar" effect. I just needed to add extremely slight bumps and valleys to the surface of the glass.

Note that reflections of 3WTC are distorted, while the notch in the upper right corner reflects the other face of the building perfectly.

Oh wow! That's really exciting to see the first truly visible pieces of the structure going up! It gives me a much better idea as to how this building fits into its location.

Sorry for a newbie Q about this building. But, now that the "perimeter columns" are up, approx how long does it take to reach street level from this point? Weeks, months, a year??? Thanks for any info. I really appreciate this site and all of the knowledgeable people who provide info & photos.

Years, plural. 2013 is what's been reported.

Yes, both times have been quoted, but the 2013 figure - as hard (and depressing) as it is to hear - is the one that has been published in the PA's updates and newspaper articles. NYGuy's timetable makes way more sense, but that's not what I remember as the official quote. I'm also not to embark on this site's arcane thread search to double check either, so I'm going to leave that up to someone else.

Whatever uncertainties remain about the timeline, that is one sweet sight right now...

As far as when it reaches street level, it will be at the beginning of next year. In fact, the entire east bathtub will be at street level next year (including tower 3 and Calatrava's terminal).

Silverstein, meanwhile, is now focused on erecting its three new skyscrapers on the east side of the WTC site.

Janno Lieber, Silverstein’s president of WTC development, said that Tower 4 is on track for a late 2013 opening. He then explained that
at 2 and 3 WTC, excavation for tower footings -- which form the very deepest structural anchors of the skyscrapers -- is nearly
complete and the buildings’ cores will start to rise over the coming weeks.

He said his firm intends to build each of the towers to their full heights, an effort to be aided by visible construction progress
that will encourage potential tenants to sign leases.

“Tower 2 is meant to be at grade in the beginning of 2012,” said Lieber. “Tower 3 we’re fully expecting to complete that as a tower,
and that will be end of 2014 or right at the beginning 2015, [but the goal is for] continuous construction.”
