Obviously the economy is to blame for the death of the Weave. Nobody's blaming the architect for that. I'm am blaming them (the architect AND the DJC) for the lie that the Weave has been "downsized". Just be honest and say the Weave is "dead" and now it's just going to be a remodel of the existing building.

Again, very poorly written. The article says they are doing the demo right now, then it says they'll be complete by April. Apparently, just the DEMO is supposed to be done by April, but given the shoddy reporting, who knows.

lame.....but at least an old brick building is being renovated rather than torn down, then realized that the Weave couldn't be built....then I would of just been pissed with that outcome.

I am not disappointed in the least. This is a great looking development had a person not known the history leading up to this point. Creative office space will still be in demand in the future but will simply be placed elsewhere by perhaps another developer. The West End is going to be "downtown's" hot spot regarding development in the this decade...I can imagine there will be many great mid-rise towers penciling out in the years to come.

I have a feeling we are going to see some hotspot developing going on in the West End and around the East Burnside Couplet during the next building boom...or at least that is my forecast of what I hope happens.

Looking at the building with new eyes, I'm glad they've kept it. It's a solid building, historical, and there are plenty of empty half lots in the neighborhood to develop.

Any ideas when the O'Bryant Square renovation will begin? A cleaned up park is needed in that area.

That was fast. Looks good. Maybe they'll build a version of the Weave on the parking lot next door

Photos are from yesterday.

Not Half Bad

I would rather have the Weave, but this doesn't look half bad!

I really like the black facade, it pops out from its neighbors nicely. Whatever retail moves in here will have a prime spot in this city -- and it breaks up the McMenamins Mile that is forming around here ... I love what they do with historic buildings, but I can't help but feel a little overloaded when walking down Burnside/Stark -- Crystal Ballroom, Ringlers Annex, Zeus Cafe ... all the same general design, menus, etc. This area has come a loooong way in the last few years though, despite the recession. I've always loved the way the streets come together here to create a nice, interesting break-up of the grid.

This does look nice, and it's good to see this chunk of construction come to an end. Granted, it'll all be torn up again when the Burnside/Couch project kicks in if it ever does. Anybody know the status on that? It sure would be nice to have Burnside become a more pedestrian friendly street.

Oh I hope the westside couplet never happens because if it does, it is going to make Couch way less pedestrian friendly, and as it is right now crossing Burnside isnt that big of a deal, it is just one of the few streets you have to actually wait for the light to let you cross, big deal.

Urbanlife: I'm really torn. I agree with you about Couch. Or, at least, I should say I share the same fear there. But I also hate Burnside as it is. Not that it's thaaaaat difficult to cross. It's not. But it splits the neighborhood in half in ways that no other street downtown does (except for the 405, which is worse). But can anything be done to improve the situation in the long term? I hope so... but... heck if I know!

Getting back to the topic at hand: I'll be excited to see shops move into this building. It's not the weave we'd hoped for, but I think it's still a positive in the end.

Sorry for being off topic, but that is the thing, I don't think Burnside splits anything in half anymore, walking around the Pearl District, it would be hard to argue that Burnside has had a negative effect on the growth of that area, same goes for Chinatown/Oldtown area. People complain about the amount of homeless and shelters in that area than they do about Burnside, and fixing Burnside to a one way street isn't going to change the shelters and homeless in Oldtown. I personally like having a street like Burnside running through downtown because it does physically split the city in the geographical sense, it is very easy to tell someone what is NW, SE, SW, and NE in this city because of Burnside, and it is a unique street in this city that it is easy for people to visually recognize it.

As for the Weave, the photos look nice and it looks like it was a good renovation. I really need to make some time and ride over to that area of downtown and see how much the changes have really effected that area. Though I still want to see the Weave built one of these days but I would almost much rather see it built over in the Inner East Burnside area, I think that area would make a great district for these kinds of buildings.

Completely agree.

Just because something is seemingly inconvenient doesn't mean it doesn't have its place.

If the whole city becomes "pedestrian friendly" by turning the grid into a series of pearl-like one ways with wide sidewalks and sluggish traffic you end up with something that doesn't feel like a city.

Randy Gragg wrote a great piece about this before he started selling ad space to housewives. I agree 100%:
