I don't want to see this thing delayed until 2015 or 2016.
Don't worry. Construction will start in a few months. The municipalities will eventually agree on some funding formulas, either willingly or being strong-armed by the provincial government.

The same thing was said all last year. And the year before that.

I do believe it will happen. I'm just not sure when.

I'm not expecting anything to be announced until after the Liberal Coronation & cabinet shuffle (to reward the new lib leaders' loyalists).

After some arm-twisting before, during and after the convention the new Lib leader will have a 'look at the good things we're doing for you' media event to get the Evergreen line started.

Perhaps sometime after Easter.
(this year)

We have been waiting for more than 25 years, so a few more months waiting wouldn't be too bad. Most likely contruction will start at spring time -March to May. The timing will also depends on whether an insider or outsider get elected as the new Liberal leader.
BC needs the jobs the project can generate. BTW I haven't heard anything about the procurement process for the construction. I wonder whether any qualified contractor was identified.

Of interest - came across this link to Working Group meeting minutes under the Environmental Assessment process.
You can glean some info from the Minutes.

Could they possibly start any construction without having the last $400 million in funding secured? This project will end up costing over $1.5 billion, so they have at least a billion dollar in secured funding to work with. Would it be possible to start construction and hope for the last bit of funds to be worked out, and if not they simply build a shortened line (ie, missing the last station)?

I have always thought that as well.

Start the construction until the money runs out and then no politician in their right mind would allow the project to stop at 66% complete. Twist those politician's arms into finding the money.

i don't think they will do anything that makes too much sense

isn't that how spain has built their cities systems? every year they have the funds they had a station or two or something - they have a grand plan to follow and they just build what they can when they have the funds

Betcha they'll start construction in Coquitlam & build south - only to run out of money just after reaching Como Lake & Clarke.

However, they will save money running a shorter 97 B-Line route
- Lougheed Stn to Burquitlam Stn

I think it would be much easier technically to start the construction from Lougheed station, otherwise I don't know how the signal system can be connected to the Skytrain control centre.

It sounds like Edmonton has an even worse situation than the Evergreen Line - not just a funding shortfall, but no funding sources identified at all.

Quote:
Nearly all councillors are aboard with plans for two new LRT lines — but it's not yet clear how the projects will be funded.

Councillors approved concept plans for the southeast and west LRT routes Wednesday despite not yet having the cash to construct them.

I hate to say it, but I went to the project office while I was waiting for a bus at Coquitlam Central Station, and the communications director told me that construction would start at the end of 2011.

Can't they just admit that it's been shelved or canceled at the moment... or maybe the more appropriate political term, "indefinitely delayed"? sheesh. This has been going on for so many years and now we have to wait once more.
