I see Vecima is having an electronic sign installed on the old post office building this morning.

Watch out Time Square.

That has been up for a good week, and it is hideous!

I completely agree, it is soo ugly. They need to update that building badly if they want that sign to blend with anything. I think that building has huge potential if they coughed up the money to do some renovations.

............. and here it is in living color. They have been at it for at least a couple of weeks.
Nice sign and the building does have potential but together it's just not working for me.

^ Watch out Times Square indeed!

If Saskatoon were to have a "Times Square", I would nominate...... 1st and 21st. Just picture a dozen or so more store brands up on Midtown Plaza (already have Sport Chek! We're almost there!). Throw some wrap around LED billboards on RBC and the Canada Building. You'd think you're in NYC in no time.

^ Woof.

That building would be a bit easier on the eye if not for the outdated peach-coloured panels.

Great concept! But yeah...maybe if the peach panels were somewhat of a silver metallic blue or something sleek. It did catch my eye, but I can name something similar along the lines of a Salvation Army building here in the Hammer. I know it's an old post office but why there?

The sign almost has an Art Deco feel to it. I could see if they changed the panels to silver or black how this could work but in its current state the sign is completely out of context. I also feel the sign sort of removes the small bit of romanticism within the area.

West Side

This apartment building went up beside the new Best Western in Blairmore in just over a week.. and they have started a second building! Wow, it will be awesome to see more people living in that area...
I know the owner of one of the stores in Confederation Mall, and she says that lease spots in that mall are being snatched up left and right and is expected to be at 100% capacity by 2014..
Good news for the west side!

Yeah I noticed that awhile ago. Here's the information on the two properties though. Nice to see some new rentals coming on stream definitely needed.

It'd be great if whoever transformed that building on 8th and Louise that is now Golder associates, could take a stab at the old post office. That Golder building transformation was beautiful!! What a hideous building, given a second life and a much better style.

I see 4 panels on either side of the sign itself - maybe those are intended to reflect the four-peach-panel pattern on the building? Maybe those panels are destined to become silver or blue to match the sign? One can only hope. When was peach popular? 60s?

It would be cool if the panels were just replaced with glass, they could make the building almost transparent and maybe do some interesting lighting at night. Then that sign would be cohesive with the building design. As well perhaps the library could reflect a similar design to make the entire area cohesive.

Add to this the modular town house complex there as well and things are looking great. All the spaces in the Blairmore Centre are filled now. Hopefully we can get some good eating establishments soon. It's a long way to the Granada all the time.

So I'm finally back in Saskatoon after eight months. I have to say its very strange being back. Saskatoon is so spread out. I never really noticed it before but now I really see how sparse this place really is.

Would this be part of the modular homes you are talking about. I took the photo in spring and never got around to posting it. They must be all finished by now.

lol kgc087 it may be because objects viewed from an airplane window may appear spread out and sparse.

All you would see is concrete/brick if the panels were replaced with glass unfortunately.

Also, I'm pretty sure the empty panels on either side of the sign right now will be used for the various tenants' logo's.

Saskatoon residents full of ideas on fate of Traffic Bridge

The next time someone jogs across the iconic Traffic Bridge, it could be on Saskatoon’s river trails.
Or how about riding under the bridge’s historic trusses as part of the children’s miniature train ride at Kinsmen Park? [...]
