The one on the left (Howe St. side) is already being designed by a local architect. Unless there is some sort of special review process, I wouldn't expect anything particularly unique.

From my point of view, Toyota designs pretty conventional cars. Nothing from them stands out as looking funky or pretentious, compared to say the Nissan Cube?

Now I'm going off-topic, but outside of North America there are places where cars are sold with engines with less than 1.5 L ratings. How does the rating work, and if they're more fuel-efficient, why are they not sold here? Lack of power on hills or highways? I surely won't mind because I'm in the city all day (or almost).

Anyway, back on topic, I like the higher buildings proposal and I like the architecture being considered for Burrard Gateway. Hopefully these projects will get rolling soon.

the scion IQ is coming to canada in 2011 in europe its branded as a toyota

its like a half size toyota yaris

There's an Aston Martin version of that, it's a Toyota IQ rebranded in order for AM to lower their fleet-wide gas mileage and co2 emissions averages. I believe you can only buy one if you already own an Aston though...

comments about the city wanting to raise heights - as on yahoo comments - some of the most insane stuff ever - some give good laugh some just need to be slapped

I over heard one lady today on the skytrain ranting about it.
She said there is nothing green about making a building taller and blocking the green mountain views.

!!!!! I was about to rage at her, but she got off before I could.!

Well, if you are looking for more heartening opinions and comments regarding taller buildings in Vancouver, look at Appendix D of this recent staff report on the city's proposed changes to the General Policy on Higher Buildings. It includes surveys conducted at the open houses. Surprisingly, they show that the attendees overwhelmingly support higher buildings in downtown. The appendix also includes all the written comments submitted by the attendees and like the surveys they are primarily positive:

Given that these kinds of affairs are usually dominated by the screeching anti-development crowd, I find the results of the surveys and comments remarkable. I can only imagine that support for higher buildings is even higher among the general population. And that is quite heartening indeed.

Didn't they do some upgrade work on those buildings just recently? Or am I thinking of a different building? =S

The city needs some sort of unique resident ID so that they can conduct an annual survey on general stuff like this online. That will balance some of the extreme opinions. Holding consultations on weekdays do nothing to bring sane, balanced, or representative feedback.
