Thanks Oni.

"e'll all be relieved when that lifeless, Soviet-style "thing" is finally torn down"

It could indeed become, 'reimagined' if you will a wicked reuse of office, operations, or a hotel. Sadly we will get a mediocre looking (still awaiting that 'real design boys') hotel that has ZERO style.

Last time I was in the tower there was still considerable amounts of Asbestos. And you really need to add another elevator. And mechanically its well past is life span.

This is the list of Russian Aircraft I "adventured" on. The AN 12 was so full of cargo we all ended up finding a space on top of boxes for the fight to Yakutsk

^ Basically replace everything except the structural steel? If you're going to go that far, why not replace the steel while you're at it?

It's like finding a hubcap on the side of the road and using it for the basis of a restoration. Sometimes there's just not enough left to be worth it.

^if the structure is sound, why waste it? Does it need to be reimagined? yes. The embodied energy of that building would be completely wasted, why do that?

Why not strip it down if the structure is in good shape. It has been done a couple of times now.

Embodied energy? C'mon Cold, you're getting dangerously close to corporate buzzword-speak there. Are you going to speak of synergies and action items next? It's a 60's era box of middling aesthetics. WOOO!

It doesn't need to be reimagined. You'd LIKE it to be reimagined. There's a huge difference. It'll soon be entirely superfluous and disjointed from the entire airport. The business case seems to lean towards tearing it down, as the sheer amount of work (even by your own admission) wouldn't make it cost-effective to retrofit & frankly you seem to be the only one who's got any sort of emotional attachment on the level that "taking one for the team" and ignoring the business case holes for sentimental reasons would require to proceed.

(I'm not saying that the proposed hotel is anything other than an eyesore & completely unsuitable)

In my humble opinion, it is the only (take the top off) redeeming architecture and symbol on the property. I am not a huge fan of the new tower and feel that the current box is a wonderful silhouette and very identifiable as a symbol of YEG when approaching from hyw 2 or airport road.

As for embodied energy, call it what you will, but there is real basis in retaining buildings versus taking them down before their due date even if you do a complete renovation.

YEG will become any other bland airport with this tower removed.

hardly

I love the ext style of the old terminal... along with Winnipeg it is classic and could have been incorporated much better with our new 'modern' thing.

Yeah hqcan, you should pick up a copy of 'Capital Modern' from Audrey's or the AGA. There is a lot to learn and love about buildings in Edmonton you may think should be torn down and replaced with glass and twisted metal.

lol, I'll be honest I just cant love towers that are either straight concrete box's, or generic flat top boxs...give me buildings like cibc's temple or atleast manulife/commerce. Then again I don't know much about architecture.

There's a billion miles between Mies' Seagram building & the YEG control structure.

I personally like the new control tower. As much as I would like the existing tower to stick around, I fear that 'reimaging' it may be cost prohibitive in the end.
