allnovascotia reported in an error ridden article that Ellis Don had the lowest bid and will likely be selected as general contractor on this project. Construction documents are now being prepared and construction should start in a few months.

Ellis Don did win an RFP for consulting services on the Library. It's going to regional council on Tuesday in this report.

OMG I know! It was brutal. The person who wrote that clearly has no concept of how an apostrophe is to be used, and hasn't found the spell check button in Word!

The main error was the provincial contribution. Luckily it is only $13 million dollars instead of 413 million (source - http://www.halifaxcentrallibrary.ca/faq.html ). It looks like the writer just missed the shift key when he intended $. Unfortunately, spell-check can't detect those errors.

There were also a bunch of spelling mistakes, HRM was written as HIM numerous times and a few of the contractors names were messed up among other things. They have since gone back an fixed most of them, the provincial contribution however is still wrong. I usually check it right after it is updated at 11:00pm, so I'm sure they were notified and quickly fixed their mistakes.

Lol Keith, as much as you hate the woman in charge of building it, you do have to admit that we do need a new central library and this will contribute a lot to the area. (hopefully.)

The following story was in the Chronicle Herald today. Hopefully this won't affect the cost or schedule of the project.

The complete story is at this link - http://thechronicleherald.ca/Front/1227227.html

Pyritic slate affects library replacement project

By MICHAEL LIGHTSTONE City Hall Reporter
Sat, Feb 12 - 4:53 AM

Halifax’s central library replacement project is to include considerable excavation, the municipality said Friday.

And testing at the development site, on the corner of Queen Street and Spring Garden Road, has shown there’s pyritic slate on the premises.

Katherine VanBuskirk, a spokeswoman with Halifax Regional Municipality, said digging will be done for the $55-million building’s foundation and underground parking area.

"Geotechnical testing has shown that there is pyritic slate on the site," she told The Chronicle Herald. "We have taken this into consideration both from cost and environmental planning perspectives."

Well duh there is slate, basically all of HRM is slate for the glaciers.

Sounds like they are just trying to report on something.

Yeah, this is not news.

A little disappointing that they're saying "late spring" for a final design presentation and then construction starting after that. I recall that at one point March was mentioned as a target for starting excavation.

It's far better to have a busy construction site than a dead empty lot.

I think the the time schedule mentioned is consistent with the time schedule released a few months ago.

There are probably some elements of construction that can take place before final design presentation, just as there can be changes to the interior, while the concrete formwork is being poured. I don't think any design changes will affect where the footings go, and certainly not the hole in the ground.
