WTC1 floor numbers from 20 on up are apparently measured from the lowest part of the structure, 70 some feet below ground level.
What? That makes no sense. Why are the the floors from 20 on up based on measurements 70 feet below ground level? Someone give me a schematic drawing? I'm aware that the base consists of a tall lobby and that there are no "floors" per say in the base and some of the tower, but dont they compensate this by numbering the actual floors based on how they would be numbered if the tower had 105 floors top to bottom?

This thread is absolutely full of discussion on the height and floor numbering. Can we avoid going over this again?

There are lots of answers if you take a few minutes to search

I agree. I never understand the constant bickering and questions about different heights. The buildings are what they are.

Im not bickering But there is no way, by looking at current pics of WTC1 placed against current buildings in the skyline, that it is close to 50 stories tall. Im just trying to clear up why its supposedly NOW 47-48s stories tall when it obviously isnt.

But it's not 48 floors high. They are erecting steel for the 47th and 48th floors.

They have to call each floor something, what number they give to a particular floor is really unimportant, except to the elevator manufacturer who has to make the numbered buttons.

One would be hard pressed to find a high rise building anywhere in the world with perfectly, consecutively numbered floors.

Just one of several reasions why the floor numbers don't mach the floor count:
The number 13 is considered unlucky in the western world so most buildings don't have a 13th floor. (By the way, neither does Tower One.)

In some parts of China the number four is considered unlucky becouse the number four sounds very simmiler to the word death. So there would be no floors 4, 14, 24, etc.

^Yeah, but Tower 1 doesn't have a 13th because they're skipping 7-19 inclusive. The old WTC buildings had 13th floors, except for maybe the hotel. I don't have any info on that building's scheme.

I think they really just picked a nice round number. If they were going to use any logic, they'd probably count 13'4" increments from the lobby floor, which would put the office on about the 15th.

Actually, that's a pretty round number too. They should have gone with that. Oh well, they're not going to change it now.

Yeah, but the World Trade Center is using floors that are 13'4 to 13'6 high. The World Financial Center uses 12'6 floor heights. The original WTC used 12' floor heights. So 50 floors could mean anything from 600 feet to 675 feet.

I understand different buildings have different floor heights. It may depend also where they start counting from. That is why things dont line up with Floors or feet from building to building. With 1WTC I just take the base from ground level to the start of floor 20 and compare that to the floors from 20 up to get an equivalent. The base comes out to near 14 or 15 office floors of 13'4'' in this building. Otherwise I think some kind of cladding or windows might be placed next week. but we have heard that before. Only they know the date!.

It looks like they mix concrete with the fireproofing then apply it to the steel and smooth it out to look like concrete beams.

I meant to say it looks like concrete was poured in form over the beams. it's smooth and you cant see the I-beam shape.

It's not that obscure of a fact. "Four" in mandarin sounds a lot like the word for death. So...bad luck.

The ESB isn't my work, so until I make one myself, I'm not going to stick it front and center in anything. You CAN compare 1WTC to another World's Tallest, albeit one I'm not quite done with.

The fire proofing is cement based and about 2 to 3 inches thick so it does hide much of the beam profile.

You may also be looking at columns with stiffener plates so either with or without fire proofing they look like box sections.

When they start cladding, are they going to start with the floor-windows and do the huge bottom pieces later, or will they start from the ground?
