loving the bikeways, but I truly hope they don't run them against motor traffic with no physical separation (as seen in the cheesy 105/106st stop, Centre West images). This scenario doubles the chances of serious collisions between cars and cyclists, as well as the dishing out of "door prizes" as people are dropped off from vehicle traffic

Nice use of bike boxes though!

I love how those quoted by the journal, and the tone of the article in general, implies that turning the perpetually tumbleweed 102 ave into transmit mall-lite and adding a single left turn on 104 ave will hurt downtown development by hindering traffic. It's as if they haven't noticed that unimpeded auto travel into/out of downtown hasn't exactly done much for downtown development the last 50 years. Hell, there's a lot of evidence that it was a primary cause of downtown's decline. Hey, I know, lets do what we have always done, but this time the result will be different!

ETS tabs $3.4M to test smart buses
Technology will make riding easier, safer

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Friday, November 05, 2010

Edmonton Transit riders will be able to find out where their bus is and hear what stop is approaching once they're on-board using equipment the city hopes to start testing next year.

The $3.4-million proposal would try out the program on 50 buses, including automated stop announcements and passenger counts, vehicle condition, computer-aided dispatch and security cameras, says a report released Thursday...

Can someone explain to me the 'wisdom' of 'testing' this technology for Edmonton when plenty of other Canadian cities have tested it and found that IT WORKS!

^^ the first system Vancouver bought was a lemon. Never worked properly. the money was wasted, and a new system bought. Good on Edmonton for making sure they get something that works.

Thank you for your interest in the Downtown LRT Connector Concept Plan. At the November 2, 2010 open house, it was noted that a recommended Concept Plan would be presented to Council for approval, with a non-statutory public hearing to be held on the recommended plan at the Transportation and Public Works Committee on December 8, 2010.

This note is to inform you of a new development on this project. The Concept Plan presented in November 2010 will still be presented to the Transportation and Public Works Committee on December 8, 2010. However, the plan will be brought forward for information. This draft plan is being brought forward for information so that additional work can be completed on it including circulation review, bicycle accommodation and potential development around stations. It’s anticipated this work will be completed over the next couple months, and the plan will be brought forward to Council in early 2011 for approval.

Please note: you are still able and welcome to address the public hearing on December 8, 2010 with any comments you may have on the draft plan. To register to speak at the public hearing, visit www.edmonton.ca/meetings and complete the “Request to Speak form”.

Boutilier says without expo deadline LRT will be build "right"

The GM for Transportation for the city says not staging Expo will allow them to build the LRT 'right' with out rushing the project. The concept plans are now published and as iNews880's learned, the goal will be to make the project fit the three point four billion dollar budget.

No Expo means, they don't have to finish by an artificial deadline late in 2016. They can stretch it out until 2018 to make the numbers work. Transportation GM Bob Boutilier says they'll also consider what has to be there opening day and what doesn't. Like Park'n'ride.

"You say well when would we phase that in? You don't have to build it on the first day. All of the stations on all of our lines we've always said we look at stations and there is sort of those that have to be there at opening days and those that depend on development. So I've got to be creative in terms of matching what we want to build with what the city can afford," explains Boutilier.

For instance a station on the west line in Glenora might be on the books, but not built in the first go around. It all depends on money and a key meeting next week, when federal officials from the "Building Canada" fund will be here will give the city its chance to convince Ottawa the plan is solid enough to invest in. Nope. Have you taken a look at the WLRT plans? it goes from at-grade to elevated just west of WEM/178th. It continues such until after 170th and the Miz, where it returns to grade.

So the feds 1/3rd share would take up all of the city's federal grants for around ten years (assuming no new programs are created). GreenTrip and MSI should be enough to cover the rest even with the NLRT already having first claim.

I hope the city realizes that there will be little to no money for anything else if this goes forward, and that doesn't mean they get to complain.

Any idea where they plan to build the new LRT maintenance and operations centre?

^ Capital Region Board might start chipping in. Our neighbours are starting to realize that they want to get on board with LRT, they will have to pay.

And certainly, we can and will complain. Edmonton always seems to get the shaft when it comes to funding. Whether its shortcomings of the MSI model, or failure to support infrastructure projects like EXPO 2017... and many examples in between.

We can take the Calgary approach, and complain until we get more funding!

That whiny baby Bronconnier was good and throwing little temper tantrums to pry money out of the province and feds... I wonder if he's looking for a job.

On second thought scrap that... I can't stand that guy, he can stay down south!

Edmonton approves board to oversee LRT construction

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Saturday, November 27, 2010

City council endorsed a proposal Friday to set up a board that will oversee construction of future LRT lines.

The board, based on the committee that looked after Vancouver's $2-billion Canada Line airport LRT, would handle construction details once councillors have decided routes and funding, according to a city report...

EDMONTON - As the Grey Cup crowd exited Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday to find its way home, at least two people decided that walking was faster than the LRT.

Nolan Duguid and Dean Alliban opted to walk to their car downtown instead of taking the transit system. They said the train ride to the game was enough. They caught the LRT from Bay Station, and had to ride it the long way around, to Century Park and back, just to secure seats a spot in the train car. They made it to the game five minutes before kickoff.

^ Oh boo hoo. I am never able to "secure a seat" on my daily commute.

The LRT has been packed for the past four days... definitely bodes well for our system. Was impressed how much security was out last night. If only they could show half that presence every night maybe people wouldn't be so scared to use it

My issue wasn't securing a seat - I don't think people minded that - it was more so the wait.

Leaving the game the lineup was from the station itself all the way to Commonwealth. We went to Save-on-Foods to grab a few things and warm up, came back 30 minutes later, and it was just as long. People weren't moving.

It shouldn't take 45 minutes just to go on a train.

Every tried to get on the Skytrain after a game ?

It takes a long time to movea big crowd like that. I fail to see how anything could have made things go any faster
