Yup... quite sad actually for many of those stations should come after a YEG link.
Not so much, I think they must have looked at LRT links around north america and found low ridership. Given the big distance the 'last mile' costs aren't worth it before any of the stations on the map above.

^the value of LRT to the airport, especially given that this map is a 10-20 yr plan, would be there, even if ridership might not quite be.

YEG should be around 8-10million by then.

Not that HSR is coming soon to a theatre near you anyways, but just saying.
I don't think the bridge gets into the picture until the east LRT comes along anyways, which is far off. The capacity issues likely with the West - Millwoods line might not allow a interline tie in as envisioned today, depending on what demand turns out like.

Would be pretty hard to keep everything on schedule with the interline as drawn on the above map as well. One problem and it would cascade throughout.

If, and big IF HSR gets anywhere, would likely be much better to run a shuttle on the HSR tracks onto a spur directly to the airport. One seat dedicated to downtown would be just as good for most, considering they could then spread out to all parts of the system from Grandin. Plus could charge way more, make it at least cover operational costs. Might even be worth considering doing it even without HSR, with the south yards moving possibly freeing enough capacity (this only the railway could really tell us) for a diesel train like Budd cars or a north american compliant Talent.

I would bet that such a system would generate more riders than an LRT link, despite the higher cost. Unless gasoline jumps a crazy amount, the wide and odd hours people work at the airport, and the plentiful parking just desn't add up for many workers transiting to the airport.

EDMONTON — There was a slow start Monday to the new transit service between Edmonton and Leduc, with the first three buses leaving empty from Century Park.

But the final southbound bus of the morning rush had about a half-dozen passengers, roughly the same number as arrived in Edmonton on the first trip from Leduc.

Too bad Edmonton doesn't have the geology to pull stations like that off.

^It's not much about the geology it's about how one can use light, materials and colours to improve a subterranean space that is often dull, dark and uninviting.

try this
http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/downtown_lrt_open_house_meeting_v1.pdf

it'll be pretty cool to be standing on the manulife-city centre west pedway while some trains are passing

oh i was just gonna ask as well: if you look here http://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/West_LRT_Miserecordia.jpg
you see the lrt being elevated until around 165 st - but the heliport at the hospital seems to have a flight path right over 87 ave - even today, i noticed the already shorter light standards have been fitted with those double red bulbs like most of downtown/uofa....CRAZY —!

LRT route through city centre unveiled
Planners envision less focus on vehicles

Jodie Sinnema
Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, November 03, 2010

The above-ground downtown LRT that will connect the west end with the southeast line heading to Mill Woods will cause traffic disruption, with portions of 102nd Avenue no longer accessible to vehicles and other parts changed into one-ways...

Between the LRT induced congestion on 102 Ave and the narrowing and slowing of Jasper Ave planned for the redevelopment, it shows even more so how the diagonal station was the better choice. Hamstringing 3 core access avenues would be a nightmare.

100ave, jasper, 103, and 104 ave have plenty of capacity to move vehicles E/W, even with some Jasper's redevelopment.

Again, we have such poor numbers when stacked up to other CDN major cities that putting a priority on walking, bikes, and transit is a good thing IMO.

Who knows, maybe it will make a few more people want to move downtown and ditch their laborious vehicular commute.

Crazy that they went with the bike-lane intensive option. I like it. Backlash or not, this will be a 'game changer' in the city unlike anything we've ever seen IMO.

The one thing that stands out for me, regardless of some station options or not, is that our entire downtown will be no more than about 2 blocks from an LRT stop.

Yet living in Oliver I'll still be 3-5 from both trainsets, & serviced by busses that travel in packs down Jasper like timberwolves rather than spaced out.
