Why would the city return the deposit? Isn't the whole point of a deposit to show how serious you are by putting that money on the table... and risking losing it if things fall through? If I interpreted that right it sounds like a big rip off for the city and taxpayers!

I don't want to steer the discussion too far off, I just want to bounce an idea around. It has been suggested that converting 21st Street -- 1st Ave to Spadina -- into a pedestrian zone closed to automotive traffic would be a beautiful addition to Saskatoon.

It would not occur without criticism though. Perhaps a more useful, and acceptable proposal would include a 10 metre wide strip of mixed-use along the centre of the road, with an occasional intimate outdoor lounge or leafy green park serving as north-south crossings. Sidewalk (both sides) width around 5 metres, and the strip's facade height would be a minimum 5 or 6 metres in the middle length, increasing 6+ metres towards the end of each strip. The concern I have relates to sunshine hours. How many hours would be lost, and at what locations.

Parking rates may go up. Convert 2nd Ave too!

Can't agree more, why should Lobsinger and Lake Flaccid receive anything back for this charade. On the other hand Lobsinger really needs the money to fill in his sink hole in Calgary.

So was talking to one of the sons from the graham family (Graham construction) who was at a hockey game, I asked him if he knew anything about Lake Placid, and he did, apperntly Jeff Grahams dad who in control of Graham construction, was talking with Michael Lobsinger a month ago and Michael told him that he was still fishing for money, Jeff told me that theres a high possibility this will not happen, because of the recession, people are being a lot more carefull with handing out money etc, so i still keep my fingers crossed that a miracle will happen, but it is a highly unlikely thing this will ever go forward, Jeff also told me it will probably be the end for Michael, because of what is happening in Calgary and it is more than one project in Calgary that is having troubles, so i dont blame Michael for this, its also because times are still a little tough for some people, however he mayby should of told us he was going to have a tough time finding money so why keep filling us with lies when some other developer could have stepped in, who knows eh. Thats all i have to say, and ill still keep my fingers crossed, but i dont know, i hope the next developer comes up with money and beautufull looking project, only time will tell.

It's good to see condo conversions still happening. It's sad though that not one new high rise was built during the boom (20+ storeys).

The wind turbine is amazing! I think Saskatoon should make a goal to become a carbon neutral city. If the winds are right it could easily produce the majority of it's energy from wind then the rest from hydro and methane capture. This would be an ambitious endeavour but a HUGE accomplishment that would really push the city forward.

yup definately have to agree with you there, although Ken did say that his office would be the last hurrah for the city, i think he should rethink that option and mayby try taking a look at parcel y, see what he could come up with, i know for a fact it would be bloody amzing if he devolped there, and it would sure get done

Haha we would need a lot of wind to produce the majority of our energy. We do however need to make a start somewhere.

Hydrogen fuelling station opens in Saskatoon

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – A hydrogen vehicle loading and fuelling station has opened in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The station is part of Smart Fuel Solutions, a $2.3 million demonstration project funded by Natural Resources Canada, Enterprise Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC).

Located in Saskatoon’s north industrial district, the station will fuel a fleet of seven hydrogen trucks from SaskEnergy and SRC.

“SRC has been a leader in developing alternative fuel technologies which has highlighted Saskatchewan’s strong innovative capacity,” said Rob Norris, Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister. “As vehicle manufacturers adopt hybrid and enviro-friendly vehicles, hydrogen technology like this one has the potential to be commercialized and benefit Saskatchewan’s economy.”

To obtain hydrogen for the product, SRC engineers designed a system that takes byproduct hydrogen from ERCO Worldwide’s Saskatoon chemical production plant and transfers it through a short pipeline to a loading station at AkzoNobel’s nearby facility. The hydrogen is then dried, compressed and injected into tube trailers that make their way to the commercial fuelling station where it is pumped into vehicles.

When operating in hydrogen mode, the trucks substitute about 45 per cent hydrogen for fossil fuel use in city and highway traffic. At idle and low load, the gasoline engines operate on approximately 100 per cent hydrogen, while diesel engines operate on approximately 60 per cent hydrogen.
