'Face the Future: U of S, SIAST work to lead social change'

The U of S owns about 18 per cent of land within a five-kilometre radius of the downtown core, and owns about 1,800 acres of land within city limits, Florizone says.

As the university prepares to move some research to land outside of the city, what the U of S does with its city property -- much of it on the east side of Saskatoon along the riverbank -- could reshape Saskatoon.

The university could lease the land for residential and retail development, Florizone says. This, he adds, would help fulfil the city's goal of increasing population density while adding more revenue for university priorities.

The university will also continue to explore off-campus locations for more remote campuses. The Edwards school of business moved some of its programs into a downtown location and is looking to locate a proposed architecture school on 25th Street.

University Heights Square (Erindale commercial district) update:

Tim Hortons has a sign up, opening day is Oct. 30. A great day for us coffee drinkers in the northeast end.

CIBC has a sign up as well, opening Nov. 6. Not sure about any of the other confirmed tenants but they'll likely all be opening around the same time.

Has anyone heard of other tenants? I know Original Joe's was trying to get up there but couldn't find the cash.

Well yeah exactly eh, I don't know, one more week till we find out what really went on in the past two months, and what is going to happen in the future, if this is too fail, whoevevr the next developer is, I dam well hope their design will look even better if not bigger and better.

Wow! That's quick, didn't take long for wright to get some of it done by this time of year despite the wheather, good job for them, obviously pushed hard too. Looks like ill be going to tim hortons haha

Actually I just read in On Campus News that phase two of the project has been approved months ahead of schedule. Phase One is going so well that they want to proceed immediately with phase two (a second set of buildings in the mirror image of the first) in order to take advantage of the current materials costs and the construction infrastructure on the ground now. http://www.usask.ca/communications/ocn/10-oct-22/2.php

New tenants announced for University Heights Square

A number of new tenants have been announced for University Heights Square in the city's northeast.

Eleven new businesses will now join the five previously announced tenants for the site, which include Shoppers Drug Mart and Shell Canada.

The new tenants are: Darq Tan; Image Orthodontics; Kenderdine Medical Clinic; Little Caesars Pizza; One Tooth; Pet Planet; Quiznos; The Wireless Age; Wendy's; Wok Box and Investors Group, which is taking up tenancy in the project's second-phase office complex.

"We are excited to welcome these tenants to the project," said Ken Suchan, vice-president of Colliers McClocklin Real Estate Corp., which is the leasing agent for the 23-acre site.

"There is strong demand for retail services in University Heights with over 30,000 people in the area and a projected population of over 45,000 -- larger than Prince Albert."

Some of the new Phase 1 tenants could open their doors as early as Dec. 1, Colliers McClocklin said.

Of the tenants announced earlier this year, Tim Hortons is set to open Oct. 29. CIBC and KFC are also opening in University Heights Square.

The 4 floor office component will face on to 2nd Ave, and attached to that will be a 5 level parkade in the rear of the property, along with a level of U/G parking. The 180 stalls is well beyond what will be required for employees in the building, so the surplus will be available for public pay parking. Some parking relief I guess, and not the gravel lot kind.

The parking might be relief for the staff of Blue Cross if they can pay to park there. My neighbour works there and says it's a pain to have to run out and fill meters all the time, as there are only so many smoke breaks you can take in a day, however parking options are limited, so this might help them out a bit.

I have friends that have been waiting patiently for the RL announcement, as they have full intentions of purchasing a unit there. They have passed on other properties currently on the market on the premise that RL will be developed. Me thinks my friends are in for a disappointment, but I hope to be proved wrong I really thought that with Nasser(sp?) on board, there would be some legitemacy around this project, but I just think that the fact we have heard nothing yet is not a good omen.

Glad to see there are some actual up and going construction projects to talk about on this thread though (i.e. Universty Quarter, Meridian head office, JB Black, Vessel Condos, Uni facilities, etc.). I hope there will be more added soon.

I have noticed that as well. I don't know anything about it besides the fact that it will be a neat vantage point for whoever is going to live up there! It's moving quite quickly as too..

Saskatoon is amazing me at the moment. How does this small Canadian City attract so much inner city development? Great work people. I really like that new "condo district" that is developing on the other side of the river from downtown.

As you all know I'm currently living in Toronto and will be for the next 4 years. A mayoral election just took place and the worst possible person for urban planning and development won. He intends to remove bike lanes, street cars and homeless shelters. He wants to trim the city budget and dump all saved money into the police department (b/c Toronto is a VERY dangerous city). This just makes me think back to the Saskatoon election and how it came down to Atchison and Swystun (sorry if I don't spell her name correctly). Saskatoon really has good leadership no matter how you slice it. You should all be very proud to live in a place with people who understand the concept of the urban environment, development and green design. Hopefully Toronto won't be too overly destroyed by the new man in power. It really makes me wonder how he is going to justify removing the millions of dollars worth of bike lanes the city implemented this summer.
