Pretty sure the Edmonton Muni is a dead issue now. The 70,000 or whatever the number was petition signatures had their chance last night to send a signal and vote out Mandel and they came up way short. Time to infill that bad boy and move on.

I just find the whole Muni debacle funny since I was born and raised in Edmonton. My mom and Grandma were so anti-Mandel .... but last time I Went up there I just bit my tongue. They were all huffy that "Mandel just wanted to ram it down our throats, he didn't give us a choice" ... to which I thought but didn't say "well yes, that's what elections are about, voting people with competing ideas" ... Very rare are plebiscites used, and rightly so, tyranny of the majority can run rampant and minorities get shit all over in the process.

Anyways, back to Calgary related election news ... wow... I'm not even going to bother commenting in the Sun Comments now. Before I was correcting grossly ignorant posts and people misrepresenting Nenshi's platform, but I feel no need to do the same on day 1 after he wins, his win stands on its own ... the Sun comments are from a bunch of angry bitter bigots crying in their Lucky Lager.

Don't forget.. the Tories need Calgary right now more than Calgary needs the Tories. They may be more willing to work with Nenshi to limit any criticism from Wildrose. Or at least, they'd be wise to do so.

I'm an aviation buff, it will be sad to see an airport like the muni go. I loved renting a Cessna and flying up there for the day to enjoy the "$100 Hamburger" and hang out around downtown or West Ed mall.

My sister was in a volleyball tournament up in Edmonton in 2003, I got a call from my dad that she had left her equipment bag in Calgary. I went to the house and grabbed it, drove to the airport and hopped in a plane and about 45 minutes later was handing it to my dad on the tarmac at the Esso FBO at the muni!

But the city has spoken on it, hopefully something great rises from where it once stood.

The four first priorities Calgary's 36th mayor laid out were, by his own admission, less to do with theory than time sensitivity:

- Grappling the 2011 budget and its $60-million shortfall. During the campaign, he made no predictions that he'd be able to lower the property-tax hike from the proposed 6.7 per cent, but said he wants city managers to suggest much more than $60 million in cuts, so council has a "buffet" of choices;

- A plan to construct the airport tunnel, "which I've decided to call the 96th Avenue underpass, because "tunnel" just sounds like way too much." A project estimated to cost $150 million or more, it will balloon if the access road isn't built while the Calgary Airport Authority constructs its new runway overtop where the Barlow Trail access currently sits;

- Secure the funding for the southeast LRT, which council this summer approved as the best use of provincial "green trip" transit grant dollars;

- "We have to start taking some real concrete steps toward the kind of reform of how city hall and city council works that we've been talking about for so long."

No, I started a thread that had nothing to do with the Muni, but a supreme court ruling that says provinces and municipalities have no jurisdiction over the operation of privately owned airfields in their boundaries. The Connect2Edmonton guys decided to change the subject.
