BTW, Here's a local news piece showing Benson Industries fabricating the cladding.... I believe it aired 10/2/10...

Benson also clad the NYT Tower.
I can't help but be a little gloatful, I spent 20 years of my life growing up in Minnesota just 30 miles southeast of Owatonna, MN and have a little pride due to the fact that Minnesota is doing it's part to be part of something this amazing!!! I was just back there and drove by the headquarters and each time can't help but get all excited like a school girl, hehehe...

You should be proud!

I moved to Portland in 1989 and though I miss NYC (my home), I'm proud that the people of Portland (my new home) are playing a part in creating a building that will belong to the World!

The glass for the BASE will come from China. That was the glass in question, and we haven't seen it yet.

Viracon remains the glass supplier for floors 20 through 108 of the Freedom Tower, the old moniker for the shimmering memorial building the Port of Authority of New York and New Jersey is constructing to commemorate the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.

Chinese glass will go into the lower levels, however. Viracon was not a contender for the bottom 20 floors, which requires a strength-enhanced, blast-resistant type of glass, said Rick Voelker, Viracon’s vice president of technical services.

“That’s not your typical window glass for a commercial building,” Voelker said. “That’s not really Viracon’s core competency. Our core competency is providing the energy efficient insulated glass that’s going into the remainder of the building.”

The Port Authority awarded a contract for the first 20 floors to a Canadian company called DCM Erectors.

According to a March article in U.S. Glass News, Port Authority Spokesman Steve Coleman said DCM then subcontracted with an American firm, Zetian, to acquire the glass from a Chinese manufacturer.

The base cladding is to be manufactured and installed by a joint venture of Solera/DCM. Solera does the glass part and DCM's fabrication division (MRP LLC) does the metal part. Then DCM puts it all up.

The cladding is rather interesting in the fact that it's not a glass wall. It's a wall of grating, either stainless steel or aluminum depending on who you ask, with prismatic glass panels bolted to it. There are to be 1 foot wide spaces between the glass panels vertically, so the building can breath. (All the ventilation exhausts out the base mechanical floors. The intakes are near the top of the tower.)

http://www.dcmerectors.com/

The glass for the base is coming from a Chinese supplier, the manufacturing of the panels is being done in the US.

Visual Aids. This is of the corner where the wall is slanted out, but the vertical walls are the same detail.

The wall is not straight because I couldn't hold the print flat for the pic, I managed to break my left thumb about a week ago. (Word to the wise, I don't care how much experience you have, don't try to fix a garage door opener by yourself !)

I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out.

Is it seriously? It looks like it's got a long ways to go. I'll start to question it until midway through November I suppose.

That would be one flabbergastingly appalling sight if the new towers looked like the Goldman Sachs at night, with every room lit like that.

I'm pretty sure they are still doing finish fit out in the G/S Tower, thus all the lights are on.

Now that DCM and the concrete contractor have worked things out I do believe in a floor a week.

I Believe. (Insert X-files theme song here.)

In case anyone missed my last post on the subject, if God were the PA, DCM would be Christ.

Depending on your beliefs, God is the last thing I would compare the PA to.

That thing can't come down fast enough. I wonder when WTC5 renderings will be created, and if they're planning on using the old foundation or not.
