Is this specifically BRT or LRT? I get a sense from people around me that they are more into voting for Judy. Will we know when there is a platform presentation or something?

This made me laugh out loud. 5 trips each way/day eh? Damn man. Good thing Winnipeggers are a demanding bunch. I think we want results, and I get the feeling Katz is assuming he will win straight out. I wonder where we can find their platforms? I went to Katz site and he just has a big "follow me on twitter!" sign. Nothing about what he will do, just news items he has made.

Or, are they developing their platforms currently? I'm just starting out on the whole civic election thing, so I have no idea. For me, whatever brings growth to the city is what I care about the most, including other things.

There isn't really any point for civic candidates to have platforms, since they individually can't accomplish anything. No one ever says "I will work with others to achieve anything". Their policies are all "I will", never "we".

Try emailing him some questions. Candidates here are good at responding to them so you never know.

Katz is horrible but Judy would be worse .
It's bad enough having the NDP tunneling a new hole to sink money into but with somebody like W-L at the wheel , the city's finances would never see black again . Plus she still thinks it's 1950 when socialism still sounded like a good idea .

I think you took my comment a little too seriously. Fact of the matter is, they both suck. But I feel that Judy as mayor would be a complete disaster for the future of the City of Winnipeg. I'm fairly confident she won't win though, but that means we will be stuck with the lesser of two evils; Sam Katz. Again, Winnipeg has no real quality choices for a mayor.

Katz is worse? Riiiight. From The Black Rod:

Have you no shame, Judy

It had to be the most cringeworthy political appearance in the current civic election.

Mayor Sam Katz and his challenger Judy Wasylycia-Leis were asked to attend a candlelight vigil last night for Darren Walsh, the 24-year-old North End resident who was shot to death on a quiet Sunday afternoon while minding his own business waiting for a bus on Main Street just off Euclid.

Both attended, but Judy Alphabet (as she's known in media circles) must have chewed her lips raw at what she heard from Walsh's grief-stricken mother.

“Repeat offenders need to be kept behind bars longer and we need to get hold of the drug problem,” mother Nancy Goulet said.
Balderdash, thought Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

As an NDP Member of Parliament, Judy Alphabet fought against keeping criminals in prison. She fought to release as many as possible on house arrest, so they could stay home and watch television all day, and go out at night to roam with their criminal friends.

The NDP applauded the Youth Criminal Justice Act which replaced endless probation for jail sentences for young offenders. They bragged they kept the principles of deterrence and denunciation out of the Act to reduce the sentencing power of judges. And they are on record as rejecting deterrence as a legitimate principle of sentencing for adult offenders, too.

Having represented the second-most crime ridden section of Winnipeg, the issue most on her mind the year before she quit to run for mayor was banning flavoured cigarette papers.

Even the NDP government knows when to abandon social-worker justice. Faced with an epidemic of violent crime at Manitoba Housing residences, the social housing agency has announced it will be installing another 500 surveillance cameras.

That's crime cameras to identify and prosecute criminals, not social workers to hold their hands and discuss their traumatic family lives.

While the Mayor offered his emotional support to Goulet, Wasylycia-Leis used the vigil as a campaigning opportunity, twisting Goulet's message to promote her own hug-a-thug philosophy. As the Winnipeg Free Press reported:

"Wasylycia-Leis said city officials need to take note of Goulet's message about the importance of giving youth opportunities that will steer them clear of drugs, violence and gangs.
"We've got to find a way to stop the cycle of violence and crime on our streets," she said."

Winnipeg has had 11 years of social-worker justice under the provincial NDP, the people guiding JustJudy's campaign. They started their term in office in 1999 promising to attack the root causes of crime and revisited the well-tilled ground in Throne Speeches for years, always bragging about the non-judicial, anti-gang measures they had added this year to those last year and the year before. How's that worked, by the way?

The man arrested for the murder of Darren Walsh was a proud graduate of the NDP school of justice.

At 24 he would have spent almost all his teenage and early adult years under the NDP.

What did he learn? That there were no consequences under NDP Ministers of Justice for repeat criminal behaviour.

At the time of his arrest, he was banned from owning a gun because of a prior conviction. He's alleged to have ridden a bus, carrying a loaded shotgun, to the Main and Euclid location, then deliberately crossed the street to shoot the unarmed Walsh in broad daylight.

If only there had been a basketball court nearby where he could have checked his illegal gun and worked off his aggressions, eh, Judy.

Not only did JustJudy dishonour Darren Walsh by the hypocrisy of her attendance at the candlelight vigil, but she compounded the slap at decency by turning the event into a campaign stop.

Have you no shame?

Oh, wait. We're talking the NDP candidate for office. That answers that.

Yes, that is exactly why she did that.

MB. No. 1 in crime victims
Province leads nation in per capita rate, StatsCan survey shows

By CHRIS KITCHING, Winnipeg Sun

Last Updated: September 29, 2010

Manitoba has more victims of self-reported crime — from physical and sexual assaults to burglaries and vandalism — per capita than any other jurisdiction in Canada, according to a new study.

Released Tuesday, the Statistics Canada survey, which studied victimization in eight types of crimes in 2009, found only one-third of incidents were reported to police.

Aboriginals were twice as likely to be a victim of violence.

The fact Manitoba has the highest victimization rate didn’t come as a surprise to some because the province consistently has one of the highest per capita crime rates.

“Crime rates have always been higher in Western Canada,” said Rick Linden, a criminologist at the University of Manitoba.

Statistics Canada compiled the numbers based on a general social survey of 19,500 people in Canada’s 10 provinces.

Manitoba scored above the national average and ranked first in most categories.

Manitoba’s leading violent crime victimization rate, analyzing data on physical and sexual assaults and robberies, was 175 victims per 1,000 people.

Saskatchewan ranked second at 159. The national average was 118.

At 376, Manitoba’s rate of household crime victimization (break-ins, vehicle and parts theft, theft of household property and vandalism) ranked first, eclipsing the national average of 237.

Manitoba ranked fifth and tied the average in personal property theft (108), finishing behind B.C. (125), Saskatchewan (123), Alberta (116) and Ontario (114).

Data for Canadian cities was mostly incomplete.

Theft of personal property, including money and clothing, accounted for more than one-third of all incidents.

One of the most troubling findings is most Canadians don’t bother to notify police when they’re a victim of these types of crimes.

Of the 27% of respondents who were victimized, only 31% called police, down from 34% in 2004, the last survey year.

“The main factor is (people) thought it was too minor to bother,” Linden said.

Others choose to keep things such as an assault a private matter, while some hold the belief police may not be able to help them, Linden said.

These kinds of beliefs couldn’t be more wrong, said Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aitken.

Reporting so-called minor crimes helps police to identify patterns or spikes in specific crimes, allowing police to devote the appropriate resources to catch the culprits, Aitken said.

“One incident might be the piece to solving a bigger puzzle,” she said.

I thought we were behind Saskatchewan in 2009? Oh well, I guess at least we are #1 at something. This is the main reason I would never vote for Judy W-L in my life. She is a lightweight when it comes to violent crime. If Judy Alphabet is elected mayor, we can expect Winnipeg to be #1 in most crime categories for years to come....

Northwestern Ontario doesn't fare any better. Our problems are hidden by being part of Ontario as a whole.

There aren't supposed to BE party politics in the civic elections, but guess which party thinks they're above the law?

That's why I'm not voting for anyone who is clearly being funded and promoted by the NDP.

Which in my ward is Ross Eadie. Seems like a personable enough guy, but his policies on crime are bull$#!t NDP policies that encourage crime rather than deter or negate it, and I don't trust his motivation for running either. Couldn't make it federally for the NDP, so now its civic politics? Why would anyone want to be a politician that badly? I certainly can't tell by his policies, he's not advocating anything particularly solid for Mynarski. Maybe he just wants a sweet government pension. I dunno.

Doesn't Winnipeg have a municipal Green Party?

Most of the candidates in Thunder Bay have run for upper level politics at some point, or have declared which party they typically support, or in one case, an incumbent councillor is the son of a former NDP MP. The front runner in my ward (pretty much acclaimed since he is very high profile and running against two nobodies) ran for the Communists in the 1980s, then for the NDP. Interestingly, the labour council backed the leading Conservative candidate for mayor. (Apparently he stated he is Conservative the other day, but his signs are all red?) Haven't had an NDP candidate for mayor for years, if ever. The current mayor is a Liberal and probably the furthest left we've ever had in a mayor.

Yet we have a lot of the same problems as Winnipeg, so....
