Changes coming to IMAX theatre at Saskatchewan Science Centre
Updates should excite customers, says centre's executive director Sandy Baumgartner

Reported By Natalie Geddes
Posted September 13, 2010

REGINA - Renovations at the Saskatchewan Science Centre's IMAX theatre in Regina have closed the doors until Oct. 8, but executive director Sandy Baumgartner says the changes should excite customers.

Currently the province's only IMAX theater doesn't play newly released films from Hollywood, nor is it equipped for 3D, but speculation suggests those changes could put the theater more in line with the rest of the IMAX corporation.

Details about the renovations are expected in the upcoming weeks.

Regina buying extra buses, fire trucks
17/09/2010 6:59:57 PM CBC News

The City of Regina says it has too many old buses and fire trucks and needs to spend $6.8 million for some new vehicles.

At Monday's city council meeting, councillors will be asked to spend $2.8 million for six new transit buses and $4 million on four new fire trucks. The buses are to be delivered this year and the fire trucks are to be delivered in 2011.

The new vehicles are in addition to two buses and two fire trucks already purchased this year.

The city says some of its vehicle are so old, they could break down at any time.

"It is likely that unless action is taken to correct the situation, a significant number of units are currently at risk to fail out of service, impacting the ability to deliver key fire protection and transit service," a report to city council says.

In Regina, the average fire truck is more than 18 years old, while in Saskatoon, the average is only six years.

The bus situation isn't as bad, with the average bus being around 14 years old in both Regina and Saskatoon. However, more than 1/3 of Regina buses are beyond their normal replacement age, the city says.

Last December, 19 buses failed Saskatchewan Government Insurance's safety inspection and had to be taken out of service, the city report said.
Scary, our city's firetruck fleet is aging. Good to know they're updating!

Would the city consider purchasing those articulated-, accordian-, bendy- (whatever your preference ) buses, like Saskatoon has? That would be a pleasant sight to see on the streets of Regina. I wonder how well they would fare negotiating turns downtown now?

What are the regulations regarding transporting infants on public transportation (ie. buses), or is there any regulations, or is it even allowed?

Just saw Gardens on Rose added to the diagrams section. Congratulations again Regina!

Also, to the guy doing the diagrams (Matthew Dumont I believe), would you be able to do a diagram of Canterbury Tower as well as that seems to be the only building we're missing.

Canterbury Park tower is extremely prelim right now. I would imagine it will be going through some changes to fit in with the architectural codes designated on the area. I'd hold off until we hear more. But just my humble opinion.

No height limits on this baby the city is all for it , they want it to be taller than cp ,plus maybe change the base of it , it will be one of the last on the site to be built.

Really? Make it taller? Well I can imagine the change they want is to probably make the tower and podium "Fatter" so that it can accomodate more space.

Hey there. I was just wondering if any of you know of a good area to live in in Saskatoon as next year I will be up there getting my BA in Regional and Urban Planning. Any further information would be great about the city!

I really like City Park and Nutana. They are both relatively close to the University as well.

Maybe I will see you in class? I will be starting the course as well next semester.

There are height restrictions. When the city did the rezoning, the maximum height with bonusing was 63.0m.

Unless they rezone again, they are limited to that.

According to the Facebook page for the Gardens on Rose, they need to sell 35 units to break ground. According to the price list on their website, which was updated on Sept. 16, they're now at 34 sold. Shouldn't be too much longer!

Hopefully that means Gardens on Rose can get moving soon. As much as I would have preferred that it was an extra five floors, it is nice to see more development coming into Regina. We have had a more or less stagnant downtown since Wascana built their office twenty years ago. With this, Hill Tower III and Capital Pointe I hope this spurs some more development.

Maybe we can finally get a 100m plus proposal to have something really stand out in downtown.

What I would love to see, is a couple more hotel/condo proposals. Maybe not as extravagant as Capital Pointe though. I think there is definitely a downtown living market out there, but the pricing of the Capital Pointe project did definitely narrow down the potential buyers to more established professionals. I'm sure there are lots of young people that would love to live downtown that would be able to afford something slightly lower than the 285K starting point for a 1 bedroom 5th floor unit.

It would even be nice to see a couple downtown apartment buildings pop-up. There is already a dearth of units in Regina, and downtown is a fairly short bus-ride to university, so you could really increase the presense of younger people in the area, making it much more of a vibrant place all times of the day.

^ I agree, it would be nice to see a few 5-10 storey midrises around downtown, from upscale, to rentals, to low income housing. This would certainly dense up our core, as well as our population. With the stadium proposal in place, hopefully it would spur up some interests in these types of development. Although, we have really progressed in terms of development these past few years!

That would be excellent to see. Even some 3-4 storey apartments in the Warehouse district/Transition/Cathedral would bring a bit more life to the streets.

So I am not living in Regina at the moment and was wondering if there were any other smaller scale projects going on that are interesting which don`t get mentioned on this forum because of their size. Public art? Any "modern" homes being built? I know of at least 5 modern style homes in Saskatoon, and it truly makes the block they are on a lot more interesting!
