I think we'll get it too. My understanding is that the City's Urban Design section has been allotted a considerable amount to create a prominent gateway entry feature at this location. And it's not just for the sake of aesthetics, as the City is going to be putting up parcels for sale following this extension, and they'll want the area to be marketable to developers and potential residents.

I emailed Ted, the engineer working on this project and with the city, expressing my support for a LARGE sculpture or something at this point to ensure that downtown is marked. It would be intersting to have a series of sculptures around the downtown that progressivley changed to tell a story, but i think it's a bit late for that considering riverlanding and the uni bridge both have very large ones.

City Park is another fine option to live. Plus a short walk across the CPR train Bridge gets you to the campus. If you are brave enough you can even cycle across everyday like I did. Ok, I'm a bit confused by this 25th street alignment. It doesn't look like an alignment at all - there is no way to continue driving directly on 25th past idywyld.

If you look at the one with the yellow shading, there is a circle on Idylwyld drive. That is a u-turn lane so you can turn around - then make a right hand turn to continue on 25th....

What is stopping them from directly lining it up to 25th? Is it the point of intersection of Idylwyld and the tracks?

I have a friend who works for a construction company in Toronto that is looking for a furnished place to house seven guys for a month while they are in Saskatoon. Anyone have any bright ideas or contacts?

Actually, some landlords prefer that because they will often pay a lot more in rent. Generally they are making decent money, have more disposable income, and are desperate for a place to stay. I know of people working out at the Upgrader here in Regina who are paying ridiculous amounts for tiny houses. A few guys with well-paying jobs can typically afford to pay more in rent than a family of four, even with decent jobs.

I think the bigger problem they'll have is that they're looking for a place to stay for a month. I think they'd be better off looking at a place like Obasa Suites if they only need a place for a month.

They can't align b/c the rail people will not relocate the rail. With train track transferring it caused huge complications with traffic flow. I think this is the only feasible option now.

Saskatoon has more vehicles than people, according to City engineer Don Cook, who is crunching the numbers on the 2009 Traffic Characteristics report.

"We were close to the line, but now we just went over that magic mark," said Cook.

It shows there are just over 228,000 vehicles in the city of 218,000 people. Cook says that number will give people something to think about as the city begins Saskatoon Speaks, its process for visioning the future.

"Right now they might see that maybe there aren't a lot good of options out there for them, so driving is the only option. But maybe they do want us to explore actually providing better options," said Cook.

Many already seem to be exploring those options. Saskatoon has the second highest number of people who bike to work, per capita, of all the major prairie cities.

Cook says cars and trucks covered more ground than ever before in their travels through 2009.

"That number was 1.5 billion kilometres travelled on city streets in vehicles," said Cook.

That's the same average distance between planet Saturn and the sun.

That study also found the average travel time from one end of the city to the other during rush hour about 20 minutes. Most, however, would peg that number much higher when a record season of construction is factored in.

A proposal by the city of Saskatoon to extend 25th Street from 1st Avenue to Idylwyld Drive has led to no shortage of opinions.

Many of the 100 plus in attendence at a public forum Tuesday night were concerned about adding extra traffic to an already congested Idylwyld Drive.

"On Idylwyld, if there's any glitch you've got a traffic jam that can go as far as 51st all the way down to 25th. To introduce more traffic on 25th is going to be folly," said John Pritchard who drives a city bus route on Idylwyld.

Others are upset about modified intersections increasing walking distances.

City staff will consider concerns before making a final proposal. They're hoping to complete the project in 2012.

That alignment looks dangerous to me. Not to mention annoying. I think I'd avoid it at all costs if there were any kind of traffic.

I can confirm that this is nothing more than a paving of the site with increased lighting. Supposedly the previous gravel parking was not enough to satisfy Handi-cap access; therefore, it is being paved.

One word...disgusting. I really think the city needs to focus heavily on alternative transportation or they are going to have a HUGE mess to clean up when the city actually becomes larger.
