Normally I always know what aircraft I'm on but was too tired to care this time. UA's site says an E170. Our first approach on runway 30 didn't come close to the ground. I don't believe they lowered the landing gear before turning south and using runway 02 instead. It certainly was a speedy landing! We came to a stop on the threshold markings at the north end of the runway although I think they may have used as much as they could to keep the brake temperatures to a minimum.

All in all, glad to be home safe!

Oh it was an Embraer, when you check some sites online you can see that AC has had some no flap landings with their fleet of the 70's and 90's also.

Even though it is unusual, no flap landings are standard training in the sim as part of certification. Glad it worked out ok for you.

The CRJ-700 ( I am assuming thats what you were on?) also has seen its share of flap issues.I have no idea if the CRJ-900 has the same issue.Yeah that would have been a pretty hot landing!!!

It was the Denver flight that was scheduled to arrive at 2:22pm. You very well could be correct as I don't remember. 2 rows of first class 1,2 configuration. I was in row 3 with the aisle in front of me.

Sounds like you had a bulkhead seat. Unfortunately, both the CRJ-700s and E170s in United Express have the same kind of seating config in J class. Both even have 1-2 seating abreast in J.

But still, it's 100% likely you were on an E170. I checked out arrivals for YEG on Flightstats, and that flight on DEN-YEG was shown as being with Shuttle America under the United Express banner. Shuttle America does *not* have any CRJs in its fleet, just Embraer E170s and E175s.

Besides, the window in your pic above looks a bit too wide and also a little bit too round-cornered for a CRJ window. Comparisons of images in Google Images and Bing of windows as seen from inside the cabin between the two aircraft manufacturers also bear this out.

The greatest occurrence of the "dreaded" flapless approach (I say so sarcastically, like a C130 with an engine out in the "dreaded" 3 engine approach) seems to happen with CRJ-100/200 and not the -700/900 models. In fact, for the latter, they're really quite rare in my experience. ACA's E190 had many in its first year of service, due almost entirely to flight software issues, which have long since been rectified. In a lot of cases, the airplane will just be joining final when the crew finally realize the flap issue, and elect to continue the approach for a bit while trying to figure things out. These situations do not constitute an emergency, provided runway length is not a hazard. The approach speed is a little dicey, though. (Psst! don't jam the flapless guy behind the Navajo....)

So about 50 knots faster on the final approach, that is a lot of extra speed.

Not YEG-specific, but an interesting analysis of international service from Canada:

Also not YEG specific, but United is downgrading several serivces to Canada this winter:

UNITED W10 Canada Operation changes

As per 08SEP10 GDS timetable display, the following is UNITED’s changes to planned Winter 2010 operation to Canada. Only those with significant adjustments are listed:

Chicago – Calgary 1 of 3 Daily Service continues to operate by UNITED Mainline in W10
Denver – Calgary 5 Daily UNITED Express Service (compared to Mixed Mainline/Express in W09)
Denver – Ottawa Service canceled, not resuming in Winter 2010
Denver – Vancouver 04NOV10 – 15DEC10 3 Daily service CRJ700 replace Mainline
Los Angeles – Vancouver 2 Daily UNITED Express Service (compared to 3 in W09)
Washington Dulles – Halifax 04NOV10 – 17FEB11 Service Temporary Canceled

http://airlineroute.net/2010/09/08/ua-w10-canada/

And Air Canada is suspending Calgary-Portland and Calgary-Seattle for the winter.

There are a lot of Germans heading there. The terminal was going through some expansions recently. They were also getting Japanese tours last year.

It appears the charters do not want to use Edmonton as its "gateway to the north" and instead are flying directly to such places as Whitehorse.

All the more reason to build an "air identity" as I like to call it.

I can see it now: "Stop the Whitehorse habit!"
