I use Alaskan often since I have one of their air miles credit cards. The Alaskan Mastercard is way better then the gold CIBC Aeroplan card. The annual fee is $75 verus $120 and each year you get a voucher for a companion ticket for $99. And it doesn't matter what price you paid for the first ticket i.e. if you get a sales deal on the first ticket, you can always book the second for $99 plus taxes. Also, if you like to fly to sun destinations on points, you can at least get somewhere easily like Hawaii and Mexico on Alaskan. Booking on Aeroplan is next to impossible to fly to places such as P.V .on points and not get hosed on the number of points you need to use and the cost of the booking fees to boot. I highly recommend getting the Alaskan mastercard if you can make use of the companion ticket. For example, flew two years ago to P.V. for $240 per person all taxes in using that deal from Vancouver.

I concur. I use that card and go through SeaTac for EVERY SINGLE flight we take. I basically get 3 free round trips per year with that card. I'd pay my mortgage on that thing if I could. Best mileage plan around - hands down!

EIA's newest parking facility has two levels of service, an online booking system and convenient airline check-in features. With the addition of jetSet's 3,300 stalls, EIA now has the most parking per capita of any major Canadian airport.

The fully automated self-serve youPark long-term lot is EIA's most affordable and competitively priced parking option. Customers can pull in, take a ticket, park and then make their way to one of three conveniently located shelters where a shuttle bus will pick them up and take them to the terminal.

The wePark valet-style service is for customers who prefer to have their vehicle parked for them by an attendant. Customers can pull in to the main jetSet office where they can check in their vehicle and then catch a shuttle to the terminal.

Both the youPark shelters and the wePark office feature flight information display system screens, common use airline self-serve check-in kiosks and self-serve pay-on-foot machines.

The jetSet lot has innovative features that are firsts amongst Canadian airports.

One is jetSet's easy-to-use online booking system, which is found at jetsetparking.com. By booking in advance online, customers can save up to 25 per cent off.

Additional level of service for WestJet customers
Another first is the full-service WestJet check-in counter and bag drop located in the main jetSet office. WestJet passengers travelling domestically or internationally can now check in and drop off their bags at the main jetSet office. With their bags checked in right at the lot, passengers can then take a shuttle to the terminal and proceed directly to security. It's quick, easy and hassle free.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot
The jetSet facility also features a cell phone waiting area, one of EIA's most requested amenity additions. Located on the south side of the jetSet lot, the designated courtesy zone allows customers to park for up to 45 minutes at no charge while they wait for their party to arrive at the terminal for pickup.

Winter scheds now showing the daily CO flight to IAH a B738.

This will reduce the transborder net capacity loss to only about 1,600 seats per week compared to winter 2009 (based on the assumption that US Airways will revert back to mainline for the winter scheds, as still showing as Express CR9). So not too bad.

Parking pain eased

Good news for the value-conscious (and who isn’t?) at the International Airport.

Another 3,300-stall parking lot has opened, south of the 7-11 convenience store as you enter the airport, with multiple bells and whistles to compensate for the added shuttle time.

Called jetSet (why???), it’s cheaper than the surface Value Park out in front of the airport. And much cheaper (first 45 minutes are free, then $1.25 a half hour, or $9.50 a day) than the covered parkade.

BUT, for the basic “youPark” service, you have to walk over to one of three shelters to be picked up by the shuttle van.

BUT, at the shelter, you can check-in and get your boarding card. At the main jetSet shelter — a full building — WestJet has a bag drop. No heaving luggage in to shuttles! (Did you know Edmonton International is tied with Vancouver as WestJet’s third busiest airport in terms of passengers flown and available seats? Toronto and Calgary are tied for #1.)

Easier pick-ups

Here’s another much-needed airport service.

Waiting to pick up somebody, until now, has been an expensive proposition, parking costing $2.50 every half-hour. At the jetSet parking lot, 300 stalls are set aside for 45 minutes free parking. You can wait for that phone call saying your friends or family are ready for pick-up. And you are only seconds away.

No slowdown here

Despite the economic slowdown, the airport is pushing ahead with expansion plans.

“We looked closely at the financials,” says marketing VP Peter McCart.

“The money saved, thanks to lower costs, speed of construction and availability of skilled trades, far outweighed any thought of slowing or deferring the expansion.”

So, by the end of 2012, the airport will be able to handle nine million passengers a year, compared to today’s 5.5 million.

On the non-stop destination wish list, New York City, Frankfurt (“not a matter of if,” says McCart, “but when”) and, surprisingly, Prince George B.C. Plus charter flights to and from Asia.

On the increased frequency wish list are London (England), plus our sister Prairie cities Winnipeg, Regina and Saskatoon.

With more planes coming, you never know what WestJet might offer, hints WestJet VP Dale Tinevez.

About that airport scheduled bus service ... “Of course we need and want it,” says McCart, dismissing any notion of protecting parking and taxi revenue.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about improved access — bus first, ultimately the LRT.”


It would be nice to know what Westjet's plans are for EIA in the coming years. As far as I am concerned they are the primary airline at YEG and how they proceed with expansion at YEG over the next few years will be very interesting. My hope is that they would proceed with acquiring long range aircraft as then Edmonton would have a chance in getting some European and possibly Asian routes. But that would be down the road a few years.

I really suspect YEG-EWR in spring 2011 by WS is a strong contender.And it sounds pretty convincing that FRA is well on its way.With LH reducing YYC-FRA for the winter it would seem logical to add a YEG tie in to fill the extra void.AC,MP and CP used to do this all the time with YYC-YEG-Europe service.I do recall not all that long ago when AC used 747-200's on its YYC-YEG-LHR flights,or Martinair's YYC-YEG-AMS flights...

I wonder what asian airlines they are looking at getting charter service with?I did hear a local tour operator saying he could fill 500 seats per week from Shanghai to Edmonton in a journal article.

Was it a CRJ-200? Those flaps have had a history of not cooperating, and without flaps your approach speed is pretty high for a no flaps landing.

Good thing they elected to land at YEG and not take YYC's longer runway
