Ummm that would be people who live in Airdrie but work in Calgary.

Also, there are fair amount of airline employees who live in Airdrie so a stop at the airport along a route would be very welcome!

Speaking of Germany, I am hoping at least one of the candidates for mayor will have the guts to propose an S-Bahn like system for regional transit. I will elaborate on my thoughts on how this could be done at a later date, but I feel this would be the best way to integrate outlying towns while implementing a rapid transit system within the city.
S-Bahn? Elevated rail for commuter trains? Am I missing something.

I think he may be talking about a commuter rail system that functions similar to a metro/rapid transit system at least in regards to frequency. More of a RER/S-Bahn/Crossrail than Go-Train/West Coast Express.

So essentially the C-Train system we already have?

Or maybe the zone fare structure. You know that whole A-B, B-C, A-B-C type of thing. I did love the S-Bahn though, so I can see where he is coming from. Those people who are against elevated rail need to see the S-Bahn to see how well it can work, and how well it can be designed. Too bad google street view isn't in Berlin to show the stations.

Not really elevated, more of the overall system itself. The S-Bahn is totally different than most commuter trains we have here in N.A. Again, hopefully this weekend I can elaborate on what I mean exactly with a mega post.

Bang on what I am talking about.

Hahaha, the C-train is a joke compared to whats going on in Europe. Even their LRT/Tram systems are way more advanced. But what I am talking about is a system sort of in between the C-train and a commuter rail like GO or W.C.E.

Im against the whole fare zone thing. One system, one pass (preferably electronic or something better than paper transfers). S-Bahn is absoulty the direction I think we should go. Munich and Stuttgart's are quite something as well (and not elevated) and more in line to what I think Calgary should do.

Yeah the German S-bahn's are sweet. I recently had the pleasure of trying both Hamburg's and Munich's S-bahn networks. They're fast (From Munich airport we were doing about 150km/h according to my GPS) and efficient, clean and easy to navigate.

As much as I'd love to see similar technology in the Calgary region, we all know they'd never actually spend the money on such a system. Sigh...

Open house held for public transit

June 1, 2010

Roughly 50 people showed up at the Frank Wills Memorial Hall May 29 to hear about future plans for a transit system in Cochrane.
In 2012, the hope is to have Inter-City Express buses into the Calgary Crowfoot LRT station, and two routes in town: one running from Cochrane High School to Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre and one running from West Terrace through downtown to Jumping Pound Ridge.
Resident Mona Sylvestre said transit into Calgary would be great for students, commuters, and residents not wanting to drive or find parking.
“I think it’s a necessary thing,” she said, adding transit will also be useful for helping seniors get down to the new seniors’ centre slotted for the Spray Lake rec centre.

The first two of the buses for the Airdrie ICE service have arrived in Airdrie. 2 brand new D60LFR's, with AC (Calgary's dont have AC)

I assume these buses are set up just like city buses with "bench" seating? As talked about either here or somewhere else, the highway safety act I believe dictates no stand-ees (every 🞵🞵🞵🞵 in a seat) in moving vehicles on the highway, I wonder how well that's going to be enforced if these routes get popular.

The latest I hear is that the Province is going to allow municipalities to develop and maintain their own safety programs. Municipalities will have the discretion to decide whether standees will be permitted and/or whether High-back forward-facing seats will be operated.

Stumbled across this press release

http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/...l-Transit-Coming-to-Cochrane-1308246.htm

Quote:
Double Deck Bus Proposed for Regional Transit Coming to Cochrane

COCHRANE, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Aug. 23, 2010) - Representatives from the 15 Calgary Regional Partnership (CRP) municipalities will get a close-up look at the vehicle proposed as an option for future regional transit services in their communities. Cochrane, in conjunction with CRP, is hosting a demonstration of the double deck bus August 24. Media are invited to ride the bus at 10:30 am

CRP member communities worked cooperatively to develop the Calgary Regional Transit Plan; it was approved in November 2009. Cochrane is slated to roll out regional transit in 2012, following closely behind Airdrie, which begins service this fall. Other municipalities will move toward regional transit based on budget and resources. CRP member municipalities hope to take advantage of provincial GreenTRIP funding to accelerate introduction of regional transit.

Media are invited to ride the bus at 10:30 am. Cochrane Mayor Truper McBride, chair of the CRP's transportation committee, will host a 30-minute tour of Cochrane in the double deck bus. There will also be an opportunity for questions and answers. Media availability to follow the bus

Go figure, the one time I don't suggest using double deckers a local authority looks into them.

The demo bus they were showing off in Cochrane this morning is an Alexander Dennis Enviro 500, this particular one is destined for Strathcona County who are leasing it for a year from BC Transit. KevLo86 on cptdb took a couple shots of it this morning:

Interesting. If they actually go down this road, would they use a double-decker bus or coach?

Would this bus be meant to go from Cochrane into Downtown Calgary? And if so, would it fit underneath plus 15's? (could be a stupid question on my part, but they do look pretty tall).

The double deckers do fit under most of the downtown (theres a few short bridges in the city, but not too many. CT borrowed one a couple years back for a week or something like that to try them out), but the current plan is to run them only as far as Crowfoot. Airdrie's commuter service will run all the way downtown, but they are using D60LFR's.

They are super 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 in the snow though, A couple years back I watched one completely jack knife going down a hill in front of my brothers place. When it snows BC transit chooses not to run them and switches to the new flyers and nova buses that they have.
