Well, they are still getting deliveries of E-Jets
(or have options for more), and they have pretty good range. for the longer flights (transborder) it is still about slots however, and demand.

That metal came from adjusting the skeds in other cities though to free up aircraft.

EDMONTON — Edmonton International Airport has bumped Calgary as the most efficient small airport in Canada, according to the B. C-based Air Transport Research Society.

The ATRS, located at the at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business, said Thursday Edmonton’s 144 per cent jump in non-aeronautical revenue between 2001 and 2008 helped it finish ahead of Calgary and Ottawa.

Nice but winning awards has not provided us with more flights.

In fact we have lost flights over the last year.

AC has since suspended the YYC-SAN route after only 1 year.

Correct but the ability to bring in metal to compete against the competition on routes quickly is my point.

I thought this was a gem of a thread.... although us hockey fans might not be the brightest, I can't believe how down on Edmonton some Edmontonians can be!

(I posted this here due to the references about the Calgary Airport, YEG and getting to New York)

Other than the fact they are building the new terminal (and that won't be ready for another two years!) there is not much to be positive about with regards to YEG.

We continue to lose flights and I see an increasing of the funneling effect from airports throughout western Canada to YYC.

Just the state of airline travel in this part of the world.

Sorry to be so negative

So the city centre airport supporters had some young pretty girls going around with the petition at the capital ex parade...sad thing was that those who signed the petition that were sitting near me seemed to have no background information about the issue and simply signed because someone was asking them to...

I disagree, the rolling 12 month average is steady and the transborder numbers are much higher than last year (with the domestic down a little I think less people are connecting in Canada (YYC, YVR, YYZ). The international numbers are down but I think it is mainly due to the halting of European flights during the Iceland volcano and not necessarily flight numbers (although AC surely can increase the LHR frequency).

We lost the Mexico City flight but we did gain more frequency to San Francisco, Maui and Montego Bay with Westjet and added a new daily flight to Houston with Continental. One can look at the downsizing of MSP from a mainline aircraft to CRJ's as a negative but I see it as a positive as the CRJ's run 4x daily which increases the flexibility to connect and actually increases the number of seats.

Can the airport do better, for sure but I think it is doing fairly well during this economic time and new flights should arrive when the new terminal is opened.

My fear for Edmonton is that the airport is spending all this money on a huge expansion to capture more US and international flights and they simply won't come to YEG.

YHZ has the same issue and is actually much better positioned to capture international traffic coming from Europe to the US, but it's not happening very fast (they've got seasonal service to Iceland, direct to London with AC and Transat, Paris (seasonal charter) and Frankfurt (seasonal charter)). Granted the population of HRM is much smaller than Edmonton.

I hoping that the proximity to YYC won't hurt YEG, but I'm not too optimistic.

You have more international traffic than we do presently

And you are right that is my fear as well.

Lets build it and maybe they will come

Halifax also seems to have a culture of defeatism attached to it. They want to strive to be more, bigger and better - but they seem to do everything they can to not achieve it. The viewplanes off Citadell hill is a great example - not being flexible with some of it is silly.

Halifax has the great position that if it plays its cards right - it could become a central gateway (like Vancouver) from Europe; because it's the last City on the circle route to Europe and the first one on the way back.

Edmonton is not well situated to do stuff like that - unless polar routes occur more? Anyone know this for certain?

Edmonton is on a great circle between Chicago and the Northeast with China's East Coast.

Don't think there's been mention of this, but the whole area where the Second Cup and fireplace is (was) as you pass security is boarded up. I assume it's for the new control tower. Haven't been through in a few months until this weekend so I'm not sure when that happened.

The expansion looks great and HUGE (from the equally huge value-parking lot). It's going to look like a real airport now and not just a parkade with a building behind it.

What's the East side of the expansion going to be used for. Seems like a lot of Tarmac but know gates.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad news in terms of trying to get Air Berlin to fly to YEG. On the one hand, they could try to compete with AC's LHR route but on the other hand, Oneworld has no partners to feed from within Canada.

Expansion 2012 zooms into ‘plane’ view
Massive construction project on time, under budget

July 28, 2010 (Edmonton, Alta.)—Over 480,000 square feet of space has been added to Edmonton International Airport (EIA) since the airport’s massive expansion got underway in 2009. And if the sheer scale of the project isn't impressive enough, EIA is happy to report that Expansion 2012 is also on time and under budget. And it’s all happening without compromising passengers’ experience.

“It’s fantastic to see this project moving along so well. Our construction team has spared no effort to ensure our customers are well taken care of, while at the same time making excellent progress on the expansion,” says Paul Garbiar, EIA’s Vice President of Infrastructure & Technology.

A project that employs up to 800 construction workers per day would normally create headaches for travellers, but that isn’t the case at EIA. What greets passengers is convenience and a terminal in the midst of an epic transformation. It’s what you’d expect from a team that recently earned top airport efficiency marks from the Air Transport Research Society.

Expansion 2012’s steady progress is a direct result of EIA’s effective management of the project. For example, project managers locked in lower costs for big-ticket items like materials and equipment in 2009. With lower production costs, the expansion is expected to cost approximately 25 per cent less than the original $1-billion budget while still remaining on schedule.

“Our project managers have done a great job creating value throughout the planning and construction of Expansion 2012,” says Garbiar. “We’re able to realize tremendous savings without sacrificing quality or features.”

With over six million passengers per year, the airport currently serves about one million passengers per year more than its design capacity.

The expansion will add 50 per cent to the existing terminal square footage. This will allow EIA’s continued, unhampered growth and make room for airlines to add service, particularly during peak hours. Expansion 2012 will not only help improve air service and passenger capacity, it will bring more comfort and convenience with a host of new food, beverage and retail services.

“We’re excited to be at the point where members of our community can come to EIA and really see the project taking off,” says Garbiar. “We’re expanding the airport to serve the needs and expectations of our growing region. This project is an important investment in Edmonton’s future.”

So YEG'ers what is up with Envision Edmonton? They seem to be grabbing a lot of headlines and media bits lately. The most recent being an article in The Journal this morning.
