Awesome! That's a damn good looking building. Just make sure to include "www".

The W got my vote for best new building in the Chronicles' Best of Austin.

I noticed yesterday they were putting up the tower crane at the South Austin Hospital. It's about 150 feet tall. I can see it from my neighborhood. I went over today to take some pics.

Also noticed two tower cranes have just gone up in Lakeway for the new regional medical center. It sits high on a ridge next to Lake Travis High School, so it should be visible for quite some distance.

Here are some renderings from their website.

F1 Track Site Revealed

It appears the site of the Formula One track has been identified. This is the location that was speculated upon by the Statesman a few weeks back.

Future F1 site revealed

Plot southeast of Austin no longer set for housing.

By Shonda Novak AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Organizers of the proposed Austin Formula One auto race plan to build the track on about 900 acres near Elroy in southeastern Travis County, according to one of the major land owners involved.

The organizers have called a news conference for 10 a.m. today to announce the site, a key financial backer and other details . The press event will include Tavo Hellmund, who has been working for more than two years to bring the high-profile race to Austin.

Most of the land was previously planned for a residential subdivision called Wandering Creek. It is land with rolling hills and a small lake, north of FM 812, south and west of Elroy Road and east of Texas 130....

The location is in far SE Austin, south of the airport and just north and east of Tx130 and 45SE:

Red McCombs is the primary backer of the course as well.

Looks like this is really going to happen.

Gotta say the property looks kinda flat and boring, but I guess thats probably what they think it should be because its texas and lets face it most people when they think of texas its cowboys deserts and plains as far as the eye can see. But it has a creek thats nice.

That part of the county is not really flat at all. There are quotes from the designer of 100-150 feet worth of elevation change which is pretty decent.

Doubters certainly remain in the wake of yesterday's announcement, including this ESPN correspondent... though I can understand where he's coming from given past experiences. Personally there's too much going for it to dismiss the prospects in the least.

Here's the US GrandPrix website. There's a nice view of the skyline included.

I've got a lot more confidence that the F1 track will get built now, but only because Red McCombs is involved. But honestly, I'm looking for forward to it as a huge music venue (as they alluded to at the press conference) rather than a race track.

I don't like Ryan mcgee he said it would be built in the middle of nowhere which Austin certainly is not.

I wonder if they look this forum. That's a very good, recent pic of the skyline without cranes -- like what you'd find here -- something very rare in a typical web site related to Austin. Most sites would use and older skyline pic without a second thought. This indicates someone very in tune with Austin and even the most recent downtown development, IMO.

I'm curious about the University affiliations; the testing labs and things. Also, the live music/festival opportunities are incredible. ACL fest could grow to 150K attendees in a venue like that... if they could attract that many.

At the very least, hopefully the US Grand Prix can incorporate a lot of live music and festival-type activities Austin is so well known for. That would give the foreign visitors following the F1 circuit a chance to experience Austin and Texas as a new and interesting destination, living up to the reputation they have surely read about.

i'm just a tad bit confused as to why some people don't want this built and others are. is there some political scheme involved? i'm referring to the posts on the espn comments. not only are they skeptical but think it's bad for Austin and the economy.

i've never really paid much attention to races before... so i think it's irrelevant to me if it happens or not. i mean it's not like i live in austin anymore...

i do think though that this would bring in a lot of people, obviously. houston, dallas and san antonio 3 of the top ten largest cities in the US and all within 3 hours or less. what is bad about it is that it means even more traffic problems for austin.

It's a conspiracy to raise the traffic count on TX 130!

that's what i was thinking. if this project goes through, it'll catch a lot of out of towners running tolls in their rental cars. not sure how the south leg of 130 looks though- is it cashless electronic toll booths like 183a? those are a real pain if you're in a rental car.

yahoo did this list of top ten U.S. cities for the next 10 years. austin came out #1 ahead of seattle and washington... so i thought of posting it here to see what people think.

http://content.kiplinger.com/tools/slideshows/slideshow_pop.html?nm=2010BestCities

they also have a video tour of the top ten cities... i like how the narrator mentions austin's light rail system.... "so far... it's cute but it's something to start with."

re: video: "wearing my cool boots there....." sigh. Just to start... those were boring boots. He is the problem. I wish they would stop. We can't assimilate that many people so fast! Maybe it is a good thing our mass transit has failed, might keep him away! ( OK, lets see who sees the humor in that or who needs to take their meds! LOL!)
