Mike nice pictures of the Austonian's crown lighting and it's rainbow of colors. It's almost like you're stalking the building. That proposed office building at 9th and Congress seems on the short side. anyone know if CVC restrictions put a limit on height there. Also the futuristic picture of Austin in the article posted earlier in the thread is very cool (looks like Vancouver without the ocean) did anyone notice the T. Stacey building was thrown in the rendition.
I hope everyone has a safe (1st) and fun holiday weekend maybe I'll post some pics of the fireworks at Carlo's and Charlies from tonight. They moved it to tonight for some reason and a friend is having a little soiree, which will surely be fun adios, Stray.

Yes, the CVC is the reason it is only 16 stories. The good thing is that the developers are maxing out the height under the CVC rules rather than building a smaller building.

I completely get it. While I love many other cites.... and I travel alot. I find myself increasingly happy to get home to Austin.

While I love Austin too I would really encourage you to get to know SF. I was only there for 5 days but know enough to say that it is in a different class than here and truly a class only surpassed in the US by New York. Get to know it on foot, at street level, its small enough to do a little at a time and see the whole city that way over the course of a few months. Go spend some time in Oakland, it too has a lot to offer.
And you absolutely have to hit up the coast, from SF to LA on highway 1 is absoltely inspiring! Enjoy your time there and we look forward to you bringing a better urbanized mind back to your home.

i know what you mean. i've walked a lot through san francisco already and while it's a beautiful city and very photogenic... the truth is austin just has a much better vibe that simply doesn't compare. and that's what i miss the most about austin. and san francisco has a lot of shady people with prostitution galore, homeless taking over tenderloin area and all this just happening a few blocks away from it's prestigious union square. i'm not trying to cut down on san francisco.... it's a great city, don't get me wrong. but the vibe that austin has to offer is better for me.

what i do hear though constantly from san franciscoans is that oakland is very dangerous, with a very high crime rate.

but, you're right, i might need some time to enjoy san francisco a little more. but that will not take away anything from austin. i can walk late nights in the austin area with no problem... although there is still some danger at risk, nothing at all near to other big cities like houston, dallas, san francisco all cities in which I've lived. simply put, austin is a great small city and i miss it.

As for downtown buildings, alas, As much as I love Austin and think some of our building are attractive, I do not think any are groundbreaking.... I can not see telling an "architecture tourist"... " oh you have to see "____" building. For ex: when I am in Chicago next I HAVE to see the Aqua building. So, no, I do not think there is anything in town that would go in the "great architecture of the 21st century" list. So far...... but I keep hope alive!

I don't like all of those, but most of them are at least fascinating. NYC has a new condo that should be getting close to done that I think it really interesting and not unlike aqua that I saw last October.

Also, that thing in Cambridge looks like any random suburban office park building.

Edit: the Beekman was the name of the building in lower manhattan.

Developers are laying the groundwork to proceed with a project proposed for the block just west of the downtown post office, with revised plans calling for a 28-story condominium tower and a 16-story office tower, plus a restaurant, shops and a bank.

The 1.2-acre site is bounded by Fifth, Sixth, San Antonio and Nueces streets and is owned by the International Bank of Commerce-Laredo, according to an engineer's letter submitted to the city as part of a request for approval for a site plan.

The land is now a parking lot that wraps around Miller Blueprint Co.
